WOMAN TESTIFIES AGAINST MacINNIS

Testimony given by a witness at the assault trial for Calgary Flames’ defenseman Al MacInnis and his brother, Robert, said the defendants kicked her boyfriend as he lay on the ground during an altercation last summer. Ann Henderson said the MacInnis brothers kicked Jamie Dutton while she screamed, “Leave him alone, his leg is busted.” Al, 26. and Robert, 23, each face three charges of assault and two of assault causing bodily harm stemming from an early-morning brawl July 3 outside a downtown Calgary restaurant and bar. “I had a good look at the guys that were doing the kicking,” Henderson told Justice Allan Wachowich of the Court of Queen’s Bench. “Now I realize it was Al and Robert MacInnis. HULL OF A NIGHT AS BRETT REACHES 50-G0AL MARK

The false alarm only added to the excitement, and suspense, of the evening. Seven minutes and 29 seconds into the St. Louis Blues’ 6-4 win over Toronto Feb. 6, Brett Hull shot from the side of the net, the puck went in and the crowd of 13,253 went wild, giving Hull a tremendous ovation. Just his 32nd assist. “Longest standing ovation for an assist in the history of the Blues,” quipped resident Blues’ comic Bob Plager, the team’s head of player development. Not to worry. The fans got it right, and Hull did, too, 5:55 into the third period, with Hull beating…

GAGNON QUIETLY EMERGES

Unlike his highly-publicized teammate, Victoriaville Tigres’ goalie Pierre Gagnon is the best-kept secret in the Quebec League. Gagnon, who shares the Tigres’ goaltending duties with Stephane Fiset, led the QMJHL with a 2.96 goals-against average and played three times as many games as Fiset. With a record of 21-17-1, he had 14 more wins than his teammate. “He (Gagnon) has coped with that well.” says Tigres’ coach Guy Chouinard. “He knows Stephane has done everything a goalie can achieve. He works hard, often staying on the ice after practice, and works well with Stephane. He realizes we have the best duo in nets.” Gagnon, who speaks no English, first came to the forefront during the 1988-89 season. Fiset was at the 1989 WJC in Alaska and Gagnon won eight of 11 games. This season,…
