NO SECOND THOUGHTS ABOUT CHANGE: SATHER

Glen Sather has no regrets about his “semi-retirement.” In fact, Sather, who dropped the coaching tag from his president-general manager portfolio with the Edmonton Oilers in June, said he was downright pleased with the progress the team had shown since John Muckier inherited the head coaching job at the start of the season. “I have had no second thoughts whatsoever,” he said. “John has done a good job with Teddy (co-coach Green), and Ronnie (assistant coach Low) is also working out well. “I’ve tried to stay away. Maybe I’ll be around more now, but at the beginning 1 wanted the coaches to have their own identity with the players. The last thing 1 wanted to do was interfere.” He admitted it wasn’t that difficult. “With our situation, we have been together so long,” he said…

SECOND PLACE STILL A DREAM IN A SEASON OF MIRAGES

The scenario and the result typified a season of frustration. In search of a modest goal — second place in the Adams Division— what appeared to be an oasis for the Montreal Canadiens, turned out to be yet another mirage. Carrying a three-game winning streak into Buffalo Feb. 7, the Habs had a chance to move into a second- place tie with the Sabres in the Adams and gain ground on division-leading Boston. But they came up Bat. losing 3-1. and saw their second-place aspirations slip that much further away. “I wasn’t happy with the effort of some of my guys,” said coach Pat Burns. “Some of them looked like they were scared out there. It’s not natural that (tough guy) Steve Martinson would have as many chances as some of our guys who…

HE SHOOTS. HE SCORES-THREE YEARS LATER

The bets were on the table. Friendly handshakes were exchanged. Allen Pedersen vowed he would score a goal this season. Several of the Boston Bruins’ media contingent, meanwhile, publicly wagered he wouldn’t. At stake were a number of prominent mustaches worn by Pedersen’s doubters. It seemed like a safe, sure bet for the hockey scribes. After all. the Bruins defenseman was knocking on 200 games without a goal when the season began. After Feb. 6, however, at least one beat writer, Mike Loftus of the Quincy Patriot Ledger, was left to shave off his trademark mustache. Officially, 238 games passed. But on the 239th, Pedersen scored. It came in a 2-0 win over the Detroit Red Wings. “This wasn’t getting a monkey off his back,” joked teammated Garry Galley, “this was getting King Kong off his…
