CUNNEYWORTH REUNITED WITH JOHNSTON
It was 30 degrees Fahrenheit Dec. 13 when Hartford Whalers’ right winger Paul MacDermid sat down at his Connecticut home for his usual pre-game pasta. The phone rang. It was general manager Ed Johnston, calling to in-form him he had been traded to Winnipeg for left winger Randy Cunney worth. “I couldn’t eat another bite,” MacDermid said. At virtually the same time in Winnipeg, Cunneyworth got a call. Outside it was minus-40, Fahrenheit or Celsius. At 40 below, it makes no difference. Cunneyworth will find it warmer in Hartford. But the question remained: Will he be hungrier than he was for the Jets? “There is no question Randy has been unhappy in Winnipeg,” said Johnston, the man who gave Cunneyworth his shot at a permanent NHL job while in Pittsburgh. “Everybody knows we’ve been trying to…

MILLEN WILL REPORT OR RETIRE: MADDEN
Just when the Quebec Nordiques thought they were getting rid of one disgruntled player in Jeff Brown, they picked up another in goaltender Greg Millen. When the Nords traded Brown to the St. Louis Blues for Millen and center Tony Hrkac Dec. 13, they thought they were getting the experienced goaltender they so badly needed. But Millen refused to report to the team. Hrkac, who was seeing little ice time under Blues’ coach Brian Sutter, was happy to join the Nordiques and scored a goal in his first game—an 8-2 loss to the Calgary Flames Dec. 14. Millen, in his 12th season in the NHL, said he had a meeting with Blues’ general manager Ron Caron in late November and was assured he would be consulted before being traded. Because he was,…
