WINGING TO ANOTHER QUICK START

It is not unusual for the Adirondack Red Wings to have a strong team, but the Wings’ record-setting start was an eye-opener. Despite having a new coach and a large contingent of rookies, the Wings won their first five games, breaking the team record of four, set in 1987-88. The league record of 11 victories at the beginning of a season was set by the Rochester Americans in 1984-85. The Utica Devils finally put a stop to the streak Oct. 15 at Utica. But the Devils had to come from behind to defeat the Wings 6-4. The quick start for the Wings was just a continuation of their past success in the first month of the season. Since the ’85-86 season. Adirondack is 32-9-2 in October. In their first six games, the Wings were…

Staszak was hampered with groin and abdominal problems after joining the Detroit organization. He appeared in just four NHL regular-season games and collected only one assist. Most recently, Shawn Cronin, a 6-foot-2. 210-pound defenseman, stuck with the Winnipeg Jets to start the 1989-90 season. Cronin, a Flushing, Mich., native, played four seasons at UIC from…

NHL SUMMARIES

NOTE In an effort to supply the most complete summaries possible, The Hockey News is presenting a revised format with additional information this season. Both teams’ lineups are listed with the number of shots taken by each player, followed by that player’s plusminus rating for the game, in parentheses. For example, (2/-3), indicates the player had two shots on net and was minus-3. A zero in plus-minus represents an even rating. We are also including a more detailed goaltenders’ breakdown, including minutes played (Time), saves (SA), goals against (GA), empty-net goals (ENG) and to whom the decision (W or L) goes. GRETZKY’S BIG DAY Sun., Oct. 15 LA: Allison (0/0), Beck (2/0), Crowder (1/0), Duchesne (3/+2), Gosselin, Gretzky (6/+1), Hrurrey (dnp), Kasper (2/0), Kudelski (1/0), Laidlaw (1/0), Lindholm (0/0), McDonough (2+1), McSorley (0/-1), Miller (0/0),…
