CAMPBELL COULD BE CROWNED KINGS’ COACH

Detroit Red Wings’ assistant coach Colin Campbell has emerged as the leading candidate for the head-coaching job with the Los Angeles Kings. Kings’ general manager Rogie Vachon said he’s received permission from his Red Wing counterpart, Jimmy Devellano, to discuss the vacancy with Campbell. But Campbell has a year remaining on his contract and Devellano is seeking a late-round pick as compensation should Campbell get the job. Calgary Flames’ assistant Doug Risebrough, USA Hockey executive director Bob Johnson and former Windsor Spitfire coach Tom Webster are also reportedly high on the list to replace Robbie Ftorek, whose contract wasn’t renewed when it expired after the season. “I’ve been contacting some teams to get permission to talk to coaches,” said Vachon. And on May 8 in Saskatoon, Fiset was named Canadian Hockey League Cooper Canada outstanding goaltender, over Kitchener’s Gus Morschauser and Seattle’s Danny Lorenz. Fiset, who had a 25-14-0 record, led all QMJHL goalies this season with a 3.45…

BRUCE HOOD

Life is never easy for hockey officials. When they are good, few notice. When they are bad, everybody does. After 21 years as a referee, Bruce Hood gathered all his memories and wrote a book. Calling the Shots. Hood has blown the whistle on everybody and everything from NHL whiners to the issue of what’s wrong with a refereeing system he says hasn’t kept pace with the revolutionary changes in the game. The book is a best-seller in Canada and has received wide acclaim in the United States. THN: What was the most difficult aspect of officiating? BH: Determining who was responsible when players got involved in front of the net. The interference that went on, and the determination of it. If you can see it from start to finish, then you’re able…
