BROWN PASTED WITH ANOTHER LABEL

Doug Brown has always been haunted by labels, but this season the New Jersey Devil right winger has been cursed by the worst label of all—he is not an 80-game player. Brown scored a goal and assisted on another in a 6-3 victory over the New York Rangers March 3 before scoring the game-winner in a 2-0 win over Minnesota March 5 to keep the Devils mathematically in the running. Schoenfeld pointed to his decision to scratch Brown from the three games before the Ranger game as a…

AMERKS STEAM AS WINGS TAKE SAUVE ON WAIVERS

The rich got richer and the poor cried foul when the Adirondack Red Wings snatched veteran center Jean-Francois Sauve from the Rochester Americans Feb. 24. Adirondack claimed Sauve, 29, from the American League waiver list 18 minutes before the 72-hour waiver period elapsed. Sauve returned to Canada Feb. 19 after his third season with Fribourg of the Swiss National League. “I’m upset because we do all the legwork and they wait until the last possible moment to claim him,” said Rochester coach John Van Box-meer. “Every dog has his day. We’ll remember this.” Under a new league bylaw in effect this season, teams that sign players returning from Europe must expose them on waivers to every AHL team. Players may be claimed for a $ 1,000 fee. The rule change was instituted in an effort…

NUMBERS

Only 23 teams in NHL history have recorded 50 wins or more in a season, with the Montreal Canadiens recording a high of 60 in 1976-77. This season, both Montreal and the Calgary Flames stand to join the select circle. As of March 5, Montreal had 45 wins in 68 games, Calgary 44 in 67. Only once, 1985-86, have three teams reached the 50-win mark.…
