FEDERKO SHOWS YOUNGSTERS HOW IT’S DONE
When the St. Louis Blues tied a club record with seven consecutive defeats, they were in desperate need of leadership. Then, veteran center Bernie Feder-ko asserted himself in his role as team captain and changed the Blues’ fortunes. In four games following the losing streak, Federko had seven goals and an assist for eight points. It’s no coincidence the Blues were 2-1-1 in those games, with victories over Toronto and Los Angeles, a loss to Detroit in overtime and a tie at Chicago. Federko completed his first hat trick of the season when he scored the game-winning goal Feb. 27, in the Blues’ 7-5 victory over Toronto that ended the losing streak. THE DEAL OF THE CENTURY
Psst. Hey you. Yeah, you. The one with No. 99 on your back. I heard you might be in the market for a car. Have I got a deal for you. I know you need transportation. You seem like a very intelligent guy who would know a great deal when he sees one. I’ve got a 1978 Toyota Celica that needs a new home. This is a real cream puff. When the deal goes into effect, probably for the 1989-90 season, a player who wears a Jofa helment or carries a Titan stick may do so, but only if he covers up the product’s brand name. In essence, the league—in the form of its marketing and public relations committee—-asked itself: Who owns the right to advertise on equipment used during NHL games? Its answer: We do. Not the players. What does it mean? Consider that this decision represents a major innovation for pro sport. Just as some baseball players receive a fee…
