HUNTER SCORING AND DISTURBING ONCE AGAIN

Remember Dale Hunter? He scored the overtime goal that lifted the Washington Capitals past the Philadelphia Flyers in the seventh game of their divisional semifinal playoff series in April. That memorable play has been repeated this season on every Capitals’ cablecast on HomeTeam Sports. But Hunter, 28, has been having trouble matching the performance on the ice. For a long time, Hunter had a good excuse for his lack of production. He was slashed in an exhibition game by Philadelphia’s Dave Brown and suffered a broken left thumb. Hunter taped it up and continued to play, but obviously had difficulty holding his stick. FANS WILL BE BLUE IN THE GARDEN

About 1,000 seats at Madison Square Garden will be knocked out starting in 1991 as MSG intensifies its campaign to eliminate rowdy spectators. A consultant’s secret report last summer warned Gardens officials that obnoxious fans, principally from the least-expensive, $11 blue seats, do more to turn away family customers than any other factor. When the Sabre got home he looked at the stick only to discover it was custom-made for Ken Leiter,…

FOGARTY BUMPS ORR AND POTVIN

Bryan Fogarty has added his own chapter to the Ontario League record book. The 19-year-old Niagara Falls Thunder defenseman broke two records when he scored two goals and three assists in a 7-2 win over London Feb. 2. “It was so nerve-wracking,” said Fogarty. “I didn’t want this to carry on all season.” When Fogarty scored his first goal of the game at 12:03 of the second period, he tied the record shared by Bobby Orr and Al Maclnnis for goals in one season by a defenseman (38). He also equalled Denis Potvin’s mark for points in a season by a defenseman (123). After 45 games, Fogarty was 39-86-125. Orr set the record for goals in 48 games with Oshawa in 1965-66 and Maclnnis tied the mark in 70 games with Kitchener in 1982-83.…
