DEAD HEAT

Montreal Canadiens and Calgary Flames have established themselves as the top two teams in the National Hockey League. Once, there were signficant differences between the clubs, but not any more. In this, the year of Calgary’s commitment to defensive hockey, they look like mirror images of one another. Starting from the top. Both general managers—Montreal’s Serge Savard and Calgary’s Cliff Fletcher—spent their formative years apprenticing in the Hab organization. It shows. Consider the similarities: They were tied for first overall as of Jan. 30. Montreal had a 34-14-6 record, and Calgary a 33-11-8 mark. The Flames had played two fewer games. They were one-two in goals-against averages. Calgary’s team average was 2.80, Montreal’s 2.84. They were similar in team size. Heights and weights taken at the beginning of the season measured the average Flame at 72.65 inches…

LEARN ON VIDEO FROM HOCKEY CANADA

The International Hockey Centre of Excellence is in the video business. Using footage from the 1988 Calgary Olympics, the developmental arm of Hockey Canada has oroduced four instructional videos. The videos run 40 minutes. Puck Control and Deking features national team coach Dave King instructing atom level players. King, who runs the players through a series of drills, also offers teaching pointers to minor coaches. “Dave King has used some of the drills from the video with the national team,” said Centre of Excellence spokesman Dan Moro. Skatir.g—Balance and Power, features Canadian Spengler Cup team assistant coach Wally Kozak and Calgary power skating coach Bob Tuff. Kozak illustrates a wide variety of off-ice exercises which develop skating balance, power and flexibility. Tuff works peewee players through a series of skating drills.
