COACH ‘EMBARRASSED’ BY LATEST CHALLENGE CUP SETBACK

The Ontario League all-stars took a 5-2 beating from the Quebec League at the Challenge Cup Jan. 24 in the Montreal Forum, but it’s the OHL’s reputation that’s taking a real pounding. Long considered the inferior league, the QMJHL silenced its detractors once again, winning its fifth of six all-star games between the two leagues. “It’s getting embarrassing,” said OHL coach Joe McDonnell. “We have to start winning a few of these games. Being close just isn’t good enough anymore. “As for our reputation, look at the record. It’s 1-5 and that definitely isn’t good. We’re hurting in that part but the real test is the Memorial Cup.” No QMJHL team has defeated an OHL team at the junior championship tournament since 1982. Verdun Junior Canadiens are the black sheep of the Montreal Canadiens’ family. In an organization steeped in tradition, where winning is expected, the Baby Habs are an eyesore. As managing director of the NHL Canadiens—owners of the Junior Habs—Serge Savard sees all of his team’s games. He undoubtedly likes what he sees—the Habs were in first place. Montreal’s American League farm team is the first place Sherbrooke Canadiens. The less said about Verdun to Savard, the better. The Verdun Auditorium is only 10 minutes away from Montreal, but Savard has seen only two Junior Canadiens’ games this season. “I saw a couple of games early but I’ve been travelling a lot and I haven’t been able to make it back,” says Savard. Official NHL Sponsor Official Cars and Trucks MONTREAL—Calgary Flames’ goaltender Mike Vernon, who registered three consecutive wins, a 1.73 goal-against-average and a .942 save percentage, was named Chrysler Canada Performer of the Week for the period ending January 29. Vernon, who was undefeated in his last 11 starts, edged Pittsburgh Penguins’ center Dan Quinn and Minnesota North Stars’ right winger Brian Bellows to capture the award. The Chrysler Canada divisions of Chrysler Motors and Dodge will donate $500 to the youth hockey organization of each performer’s choice. The Chrysler Canada divisions of Chrysler Motors and Dodge also sponsor the Performer of the Month and Performer of the Year Awards, for which the latter receives the Chrysler vehicle of his choice.
