BIG CHALLENGE

After nine straight winning seasons at two different colleges, Brad Buetow is learning what it’s like on the other side of the fence. Buetow, who compiled a career 233-115-8 record as coach at Minnesota and U.S. International, is now behind the bench of the 8-16-3 Colorado College Tigers. But he loves the challenge of resurrecting a team that went 4-33-1 in 1987-88—dead last in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. “I’ve enjoyed this year as much if not more than any year I’ve been a coach,” says Buetow, 38. Last season’s Tigers set an NCAA record for losses in Mike Bertsch’s last year as coach. “We had a difficult year last year,” recalls Bertsch, who resigned to take a job as programs manager of SCI, a Colorado Springs-based high-tech plant. “But we had a young team.…

DAN KELLY FANS SALUTE AN ORIGINAL

I grew up in St. Louis and have followed the Blues and Dan Kelly since 1967-68, the Blues’ first season. I now reside in Kansas City, but still follow the Blues on the radio, having listened to Kelly’s rich baritone resonate through the static of innumerable games. Because of cable television, I enjoyed watching and listening to Kelly’s televised broadcasts here in Kansas City with hockey friends—most of them from different parts of the U.S. and Canada—all of whom agree Dan Kelly is hockey’s finest broadcaster. Paul W. Lore,Kansas City. Mo. MORE PRAISE I would like to add my congratulations to the hundreds of thousands Dan Kelly has received on being chosen for the Lester Patrick Trophy and the Hockey Hall of Fame. Mine was one of the countless number of lives he…

But it…
