WEEKS MORE THAN A BACKUP GOALIE

Steve Weeks has become a problem for the Vancouver Canucks. It was always so easy before. You could slot him as a backup goalie and he seemed happy enough. At least he never complained. In Hartford there was always Mike Liut ahead of him and in New York before that, Glen Hanlon and John Vanbiesbrouck. But he never truly believed he was a backup goalie. He always thought of himself as one of the goalies who happened to play fewer games. That changed late last season when the 30-year-old was traded from the Whalers to Vancouver for veteran goalie Richard Brodeur. Brodeur was given his release from the Whalers Nov. 23 after spending most of this season in the minors. “I looked at coming here as an opportunity to begin again,” he said. “This year…

PENGUINS SHOULD MEET LEMIEUX’S DEMANDS

No player has meant more to his team’s success and growth than Mario Lemieux has to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Edmonton was above .500 (7-5-4) when Wayne Gretzky missed 16 games last season. The Penguins lost the three games Mario missed this season. If the talents of Bob Errey, Rob Brown, Randy Cunney worth and the rest of the Penguin team were not enough to win those three games, they sure aren’t enough to take them down the road to the Stanley Cup. Penguin owner Ed DeBartolo should pay Lemieux what he deserves. Matthew Trudies,Toronto, Ohio GROW UP. MARIO Mario Lemieux will hold his breath until the Pittsburgh Penguins give in to his demands. If that fails, he will take his puck and go home. Playing the Civic Arena crowds well for four years with his…

‘TO BE HONEST, I’M NOT REALLY QUALIFIED’

A day before training camp opened in September, a friend suggested to Boston Bruin coach Terry O’Reilly that he begin his address to the team by quoting Confucius: “The journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step.” O’Reilly smiled. “You have to build up confidence over the course of the year. If you don’t, then it’s hard to sustain once the playoffs start.” Few coaches have instilled confidence in their clubs better than O’Reilly. He guided the Bruins past the Montreal Canadiens in the Adams Division final, the first time Boston had beaten Montreal in the playoffs since 1943. The Bruins were later swept by Edmonton in the Stanley Cup final. This season they got off to a 9-3-3 start, though they slumped to 10-8-5. THN: What was your major concern this…
