LUDWIG SUSPENDED FOR ‘FLAGRANT FOUL’

On the same day an earthquake shook eastern North America. Craig Ludwig was slapped with a five-game suspension for rocking an opponent with his elbow. NHL executive vice-president Brian O’Neill suspended Ludwig Nov. 25, six days after the Montreal Canadien defenseman cold-cocked Chicago’s Trent Yawney in a game at the Forum. “I’m disappointed,” Ludwig said. “The decision has been made and there is nothing I can do about it.” The suspension was to take effect Dec. 3. when the Canadiens played host to the Buffalo Sabres. It could have taken effect immediately had the Canadiens waived their seven-day right-of-appeal period. Managing director Serge Savard, who passed on that right when Stephane Richer was set down for 10 games on Nov. 17, indicated he would rather have Ludwig for games against Edmonton Nov. 26, Hartford Nov.…

LATE BLOOMER VINDICATES FERGUSON

John Ferguson can say, “I told you so” on at least one count. With 90 points in his first four National Hockey League seasons, the idea of Andrew McBain leading the Winnipeg Jets in scoring would have been laughable at best. But one man believed. And former Winnipeg Jets’ general manager Ferguson stuck by his first-round draft choice (eighth overall) in 1983. Today, both Ferguson, no longer with the club, and McBain, now a star attraction in his sixth season, can smile. The 23-year-old right winger had 30 points in 20 games, tied with Dale Hawerchuk for No. 1 on the club. McBain gave more than a hint of things to come last year, when he broke loose for 32 goals and 31 assists in 74 games. “It’s a combination of a lot of…

SON OF CANADA CUP

The enormously successful Canada Cup tournament may spawn an offspring in 1990. The Canadian Hockey League (umbrella organization for the Ontario, Quebec and Western Leagues), Canadian Amateur Hockey Association and Soviet Ice Hockey Federation hope to establish a Junior Canada Cup of sorts. Were it to come off, the four-team event (one all-star team from each junior loop and the powerful Soviet national juniors) would be played at an as yet undetermined site in February, 1990. The idea is still only in the discussion stage, but CAHA president Murray Costello said he believes it will fly. The next step is selling it to the 40 major junior teams across Canada. The proposal doesn’t have 100 per cent support. London Knights’ general manager-coach Wayne Maxner questions how much hockey can be crammed into one season.…
