HAWKS BOMBARDED INTO LAST PLACE
Chicago Blackhawk coach Mike Keenan probably didn’t think it would get this bad when he became coach of the Chicago Blackhawks. When a five-game losing streak dropped their record to I-7-1, the Hawks plummeted not only to the bottom of the Norris Division but to the bottom of the entire NHL. Keenan said it was “a challenge” to keep his patience. “You just try to keep educating and teaching,” he said. “Hopefully, some day they’ll get the message.” Until that happens, captain Denis Savard was more blunt about the state of the Hawks. “It’s a disgrace, to be honest,” Savard said after a 7-4 loss at Pittsburgh Oct. 22. “It’s not fun.” The 1-7-1 start was the worst for the Hawks since 1967-68. They allowed 48 goals in their first nine games, the NHL’s worst defensive…

DEFENSIVE STYLE DESTINED FOR SCRAPHEAP
Hartford Whalers are letting in more goals this year—nearly five a game through the first seven games—but they’re scoring more. And the results have been positive. Last season, the Whalers didn’t win a game when an opponent scored more than four goals. In successive Saturday home games this year, the Whalers outgunned Chicago 7-5 and Philadelphia 8-6. “We don’t play the same style as in the last few years,” said goalie Mike Liut, whose goals-against average ballooned to 4.82, well above his career mark of 3.48. “We’re pursuing more. And in the course of an adjustment if one guy breaks down, it affects the whole process and the other team can get a layup.” The Whalers finished with a franchise-best 267 goals (3.26 average) allowed and franchise-worst 249 (3.08) goals for last season. When…
