ROOKIE SUFFERS EARLY SHELL SHOCK

Rookie goaltender Vincent Riendeau received a baptism by fire in his debut with the St. Louis Blues. Coach Brian Sutter threw him in for the third period of a game the Blues were losing 7-3 at Detroit on Oct. 14. The Blues came back to tie the game 8-8. Sutter started Riendeau the next night against, arguably, the best player in the National Hockey League—Mario Lemieux of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Riendeau, 22, emerged shell-shocked. The Penguins beat the Blues 9-2 and Lemieux had a career-best eight points on two goals and six assists. Pittsburgh scored three of its goals on power plays. The Penguins outshot St. Louis 35-22 as the Blues’ defense rested. “All we could tell him was, ‘We were horsefeathers, but we’re sorry,’” defenseman Gordie Roberts said. “You can’t blame the goalie for something…

BANNER EFFORT NOT IN THE CARDS AT HOME OPENER

Memories of the 1988 Stanley Cup playoffs have come back to haunt the New Jersey Devils. The Devils lost an ugly 8-5 game, as referee Dan Marouelli called a total of 169 minutes in penalties. “We didn’t know what to expect,” said Joe…

SAMUELSSON NOT CONCERNED ABOUT RATINGS

Ulf Samuelsson was good enough to play for the NHL all-stars against the Soviets in Rendez-Vous ’87, but he wasn’t deemed good enough by the Swedes for Canada Cup ’87. Mike Keenan didn’t pick Samuelsson for the 1988 All-Star Game, but his Whaler teammates did vote him their outstanding player. So, is he one of the top 10 defensemen in the NHL or not? That was the question asked after Samuelsson scored a career-best four points (1-3-4) to lift the Whalers over Keenan’s Chicago Blackhawks 7-5 on Oct. 15, and lead a mini-revival after a dismal start. Samuelsson’s outburst may have paled in comparison to Mario Lemieux’s eight and Cam Neely’s seven points the same weekend. But for the Whalers, who scored a meager five goals in three opening losses, 11 goals in wins…
