TV SHOW AIMS TO CLIP EAGLE’S WINGS

What looms as one of the harshest attacks against hockey power broker Alan Eagleson is being organized by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation current-affairs program the fifth estate. A CBC official informs BLUELINES that researchers for the show have already contacted a number of significant personalities who have had grievances against Eagleson. The Eagle’s longtime adversary, Bobby Orr, was contacted but apparently declined to appear on the program, which is scheduled to air in November. “Basically, what he told us was that he has a ‘non-disclosure’ agreement with Eagleson,” says researcher Elliot Schiff. According to current info, the show aims to focus on Eagleson’s “conflicts-of-interest,” as well as alleged disenchantment with his work as players’ union boss. Eagleson is expected to appear on the show. MILLER TIME Madison A venue sports promoter Marty…

LEMIEUX AND PENGUINS SURPRISED BY FUSS OVER EIGHT-POINT GAME

Mario Lemieux stared hard at the thicket of microphones sprouting before him, and couldn’t understand what all the fuss was about. Lemieux insisted he had played better games and besides, it’s not like nobody had ever scored eight points in a game before. Right, but since players had scored eight or more points in a game only 10 previous times in NHL history—none while wearing a Pittsburgh Penguin uniform—Lemieux finally agreed his accomplishment merited mention. But not much. “It was a great game,” he said, “but tomorrow, I have to forget about it” But don’t expect the St. Louis Blues to put it behind them as quickly, since they were the ones victimized by his two goals and six assists in a 9-2 Pittsburgh victory Oct. 15. Lemieux’s outburst tied the franchise single-game assist record held…

LOWE BLOW LEAVES OILER SHAKING HEAD

Not only did Kevin Lowe fail to get the license number of the truck that ran over him during a 6-1 loss in Calgary, but the veteran Edmonton Oiler defenseman couldn’t recall the time and place of the collision. “I don't remember a thing,” Lowe commented on the concussion he suffered when blindsided by Flame right winger Mark Hunter, Oct. 14. “1 don’t remember who hit me. The doctor tried to tell me what happened, but 1 guess I’ll have to wait and see the film. “The doctor and the staff at the hospital (where he spent the night for observation) told me later that I kept insisting I was in Vancouver and that it was September.” Lowe lay unconscious behind the Oiler net for several anxious minutes following the hit by Hunter,…

WINNIPEG LOSING FANS AND GAMES

If a quick start to the season means anything at all, then the Winnipeg Jets just might be in trouble, both on and off the ice. After three games on the road and two at home, Winnipeg had earned just one victory and two ties and drawn a combined total of only 20,867 fans. A franchise-low 10,427 spectators watched the Oct. 14 home-opener. “Right now, I think our hockey club is kind of in that adjustment stage where we are learning about a few people, learning to make adjustments to one another,” said veteran winger Doug Smail following a 3-3 tie with the Edmonton Oilers, Oct. 16. “Let’s not put the cart before the horse here. We are a hockey club that is looking for ways to win.” Indeed, they are. After opening with a…
