POINT-MAN LEEMAN ADDS NEEDED PUNCH TO LEAF POWER PLAY
As far as Gary Leeman is concerned, working the power play is like riding a bike. Once you learn the technique, you never forget it. With Regina Pats of the Western League, Leeman was an intricate part of one of the best power plays in junior hockey. Now, five years later, he’s using the same skills to quarterback the Toronto Maple Leafs' power play. “We had such a powerful power play in Regina that it was easier to learn how it should be done.” explained Leeman, 24. “One of the most important things about a successful power play is to have patient people. “When things aren’t going right you can’t be panicked into taking stupid shots. You have to work to get back into the right pattern. “If things aren’t working, if the guys are starting…

THE DODGE NHL REPORT
Dodge is the official sponsor of NHL All-Star Fan Balloting NEW YORK-Pittsburgh Penguin center Mario Lemieux, who recorded 15 points (6-9-15) in his first four games this season, and Los Angeles King center Wayne Gretzky, who led his team to a 4-1-0 record and registered at least a point in each of his first five games (6-7-13), were named co-winners of the Dodge NHL Performer-of-the-Week award for the period ending Oct. 16. Lemieux and Gretzky, who each tallied one power-play and two shorthanded goals during the 10-day period, edged Chicago Blackhawk center Denis Savard and Philadelphia Flyer goaltender Ron Hextall to capture the honor. Dodge also sponsors the Performer-of-the-Month and Performer-of-the-Year Awards, for which the latter receives the Chrysler/Dodge vehicle…

THE LOOK ON DEMERS' FACE SAID IT ALL
If you have grown weary of the Detroit Red Wings' Booze Brothers saga, take heart. You arc not alone. The Red Wing travelling road show slipped into town in the middle of the night and, when the new day dawned, the dispositions were far from sunny. The Wings were nursing a collective hangover of their own, hurtin' for certain after escaping with an 8-8 tie at home against St. Louis. Detroit had led 7-3. but needed to pull the goalie just to draw even. So there they were on the morning after. The defending Norris Division champs-one of the best teams in the NHL, but winless in the new season-filed into Maple Leaf Gardens for a game-day skate and team meeting. Man, they looked like hell. Bob Probert? Petr Klima? Don't even ask. No one,…

OKAY, BUT WHO WAS THE GUY EATING THE RINK STEAK?
This letter is about hype, Jim Van Home and facts. I’ll admit that whatever hype is attached to Wayne Gretzky is deserved. But when Jim Van Home of The Sports Network asked us during the first intermission of the Oct. 6 telecast to remember where we were when we heard about The Trade, he compared it to the shooting of John Lennon and the shooting of Elvis Presley. Could you please find out for me when Elvis was shot and if it was fatal? Perhaps Jim knows more than the rest of us. Actually, I think I saw Elvis in the crowd. The camera swept past a man fitting his description, eating a few rink steaks and sucking on a soda. Paul Robertson, Mississauga, Ont. ROOKIES? YES! I most certainly do consider Sean Burke and…
