Chouinard Bolts From Tigres To Sign As Coach In Verdun

Guy Chouinard is aware of the challenge he took on April 7 by leaving his position as coach of the Victoriaville Tigres for a similar post with the Verdun Jr. Canadiens. “When I took over in Longueuil (the franchise base before this season), the team had missed the playoffs two years in a row,” said Chouinard, a former NHLer. “It’s the same thing in Verdun. “I see it as a promotion. Going to the Montreal organization is a big step for me.” The Jr. Canadiens are owned by the Montreal Canadiens. After retiring from the NHL, Chouinard coached the Longeuil-Victoriaville franchise for about 2½ seasons. He took the Longeuil Chevaliers from last place in 1985-86 to the 1987 league championship and Memorial Cup tournament. “We’ll have to work on defense in Verdun,” said Chouinard. “They…

THIS WEEK…

20 YEARS AGO: • Philadelphia Flyer general manager Bud Poile hinted the low-scoring club might trade one of its two standout goalies—Doug Favell and Bernie Parent—to obtain some firepower. “It would be a shame to lose Favell or Parent,” said Poile, “but it’s no secret we need some scorers. We’ll have to make a trade.” The scored just 173 goals in 74 games in 1967-68, but elected to stand pat with goalies. They scored 174 goals in 76 games the next season. • After beating the Oklahoma City Blazers in a seven-game semi-final series, winning the Central Professional League’s final series proved a breeze for the Tulsa Oilers. Tulsa swept the Fort Worth Wings to win the title. Oiler goalies Serge Aubry and Al Smith combined to post a 2.72 goals-against average…

Capitals Exorcise Demons, Devils Are Next

LANDOVER, Md.—The Washington Capitals set themselves up for a game of “Beat the Devil,” by exorcising a couple of demons in their seven-game Patrick Division semi-final triumph over the Philadelphia Flyers. The Capitals became the fifth team in Stanley Cup history to overcome a 3-1 deficit in games as they captured the last three over the Flyers by scores of 5-2, 7-2 and 5-4. In the finale at Capital Centre, Washington fell behind 3-0 after 23 minutes, but eventually won on Dale Hunter’s goal at 5:57 of sudden death. It was Hunter’s fourth career playoff overtime score. It was only a year ago that the Capitals held a 3-1 lead over the New York Islanders and dropped three straight, including a four-overtime finale. The Capitals were looking to carry the momentum with them against…

Early Elimination Completes Flyer Decline

PHILADELPHIA—Last year’s Philadelphia Flyers would never have wasted a three-goal lead midway through the seventh game of a Stanley Cup playoff series. But this is not the team that came within a game of winning the Cup in 1987. The end came suddenly at the Cap Centre, when Dale Hunter’s overtime goal gave the Washington Capitals a 5-4 win, to finish a comeback that saw them bounce back from a 3-1 deficit in games and 3-0 shortfall in the deciding contest. “It was like we had sand in our hands,” said a dejected Rick Tocchet, “and we kept watching it slip through our fingers. Hey, we were up three games to one. We were ahead 3-0 with about a half a game to play. We were confident, but we just couldn’t hold on.” And that,…
