Foul-Up Over Arena Lease Foils Sacramento Franchise

The International League isn’t going to Sacramento after all. Proposed Sacramento franchise owner Wayne Gural of Edmonton was unable to obtain a lease agreement with Arco Arena, which serves as home to the Kings of the National Basketball Association. Because of the lease controversy, the IHL withdrew the conditional franchise it awarded Gural in February, at the league’s semi-annual meeting in St. Louis. “I was disappointed about Sacramento, but that’s the way it is,” said commissioner Bud Poile. “Sacramento, which had a conditional franchise, was unable to get a lease with Arco Arena this year.” But the commissioner won’t rule out a Sacramento franchise in the future. Poile acknowledged franchise general manager Greg Pilling and Gural have talked to officials of Kansas City’s Kemper Arena about establishing an IHL team in the Missouri metropolis. “But that’s…

Dejected Kings’ Summer Comes Early Aagin

LOS ANGELES—”Depressing” might be an appropriate word to describe another post-season pratfall for the Los Angeles Kings. Right alongside the word “traditional.” The Kings, have made a habit out of finishing fourth (or fifth) in the Smythe Division during the regular season, forcing them to meet either the Edmonton Oilers or Calgary Flames in first-round play—which is why they have failed to advance any further since 1982. “You can go back further than that,” captain Dave Taylor pointed out. “I’ve been here 11 years and we’ve only gotten out of the first round once.” The Kings have qualified for the playoffs seven times since Taylor came aboard in 1977-78. and they’ve been bumped six times, putting together a dismal record of 8-27. Half of those wins came in 1981-82, when the Kings took a…

Victory Earns Voltigeurs Some Time Off

It came a game late, but the Drummondville Voltigeurs earned their holiday. “I gave them two days off,” said Volts’ coach Jean Begin after Drummondville hammered Shawinigan 12-2 April 15 to wrap up the Quebec League’s best-of-seven Dilio Division al series 4-1. When the Volts beat the Cataractes to take a 3-0 series lead, Begin said he would give his team a short vacation if they wrapped it up in four straight. Drummondville promptly lost game four 5-4 April 13 at Shawinigan. The Volts were charged up for game five. Steve Chartrand scored twice and added two assists while Alain Charland had two goals for Drummondville. But defense was the key to the series. ‘‘We were able to shut (Patrice) Lefebvre and (Stephan) Lebeau down tight,” Begin said. The LeBel Division final turned into a dandy…

Bruins Look To Halt Habs’ Rite Of Spring

BOSTON—It’s Rick Middleton’s favorite season. “I love this time of year,” the Boston Bruin left winger said. ‘‘The (baseball) Red Sox are playing. The (basketball) Celtics are getting to the playoffs. The marathon is on. And it’s us and Montreal. “It wouldn’t really be the playoffs without Boston-Montreal.” For the 19th time in 45 years, the Bruins are facing the Canadiens in a Stanley Cup playoff series. They haven’t won one since 1943, when the Montreal lineup included Toe Blake and Paul Bibeault and the Bruins had Dit Clapper and Frankie Brimsek. The Bruins have been eliminated by the Habs in the first round the last four years. It’s the kind of a record that makes normally genial hockey players a bit testy. “That’s irrelevant,” snapped Bruin center Steve Kasper. “It’s also irrelevant that we lost to…
