Devils Take A Dive Following Win Streak
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.—Not even Jim Schoenfeld can work a miracle. After emotional victories in his first three games behind the New Jersey Devils’ bench, Schoenfeld’s fortunes turned dramatically for the worse. Not only did the Devils turn around and lose three in a row under their new coach, but Schoenfeld’s first full week at the helm produced little more than trouble, including: • Key injuries which left the team gering. • A near-brawl in Edmonton, during which Schoenfeld engaged in a shouting match with Oilers’ coach Glen Sather. • An unhappy player who voiced his displeasure over a lack of ice time. Schoenfeld had not yet had the luxury of 28-goal scorer Pat Verbeek, who was already on the shelf with sprained left knee ligaments when the change from Doug Carpenter to Schoenfeld took place Jan.…
Flames Helping Canada
Jim Peplinski’s Olympic dream began the January morning when a reporter asked if he’d consider playing for Canada in the 1988 Winter Games. Days earlier, the Calgary Flames—a team that promised to send a better-than-average player to Team Canada for the Games—traded the most logical candidate, center Carey Wilson, to the Hartford Whalers. “We joked about me playing for the Polish national team,” said Peplinski. “As it turns out, Poland is our first game in the Olympics.” That will be the one game Peplinski cannot play. The Flames set one condition on Peplinski’s participation—that he report to Team Canada Feb. 15, two days after the Winter Games begin. The Flames wanted him in the lineup for road games against the Philadelphia Flyers and Washington Capitals, Feb. 12 and 14, respectively. The Olympic team’s coach…

20 YEARS’AGO: • Philadelphia Flyer center Gary Peters’ season ended after 31 games when he suffered damaged fiber tissues in his left eye. Peters was hit in the eye by the blade of a stick during a goal-mouth scramble against the New York Rangers. He returned to play five more NHL and two WHA seasons. Meanwhile, St. Louis goalie Seth Martin nearly suffered the same fate as Peters, Though Martin was wearing a mask, he still suffered a deep cut under the left eye when hit by a shot from teammate Larry Keenan in practice. The shot cracked Martin’s mask. 10 YEARS AGO: • Gilbert Perreault’s goal at 3:22 of overtime gave the Wales Conference a 3-2 All-Star Game victory over the Campbell Conference in Buffalo. The Campbells led 2-0 on goals by Bill…
NEXT WEEK
Olympic hockey’s two Daves will largely determine the fates of Canada and the United States at the Olympic Games. They are coaches Dave King of Canada and Dave Peterson of the U.S. Next week’s cover story will focus on King, who has earned enormous respect throughout the hockey community for his work with Team Canada. The Canadian triumph at the Izvestia tournament was viewed as much a triumph for King as goalie Sean Burke and his teammates. Peterson has not received the same amount of attention as King, but his mandate is the same—to lead his country to the gold medal. Although it has been overshadowed by the Calgary Olympic Games this year, the NHL All-Star Game was expected to create some thrills of its own. Read about the annual league showcase, held…
