15 YEARS AGO: • After being hit in the ankle by the puck 11 times in one game against Atlanta, Minnesota North Star defenseman Tom Reid took action. He devised a pair of leather anklets as protection. The new equipment quickly caught on with defense-of the day. • Toronto Maple Leaf defenseman Bob Baun was forced to retire in the midst of his 17th NHL season, after suffering a neck injury. Doctors told Baun he was chancing paralysis if he continued to play. Baun, who played for Toronto, Oakland and Detroit, scored 37 goals and 187 assists in 964 regular-season games. 35 YEARS AGO: • Boston Bruin rookie defenseman Bob Armstrong was nicknamed ‘Beau Brummel’ by Boston Record hockey writer Bill Grimes. Tucker Down And Out, Cloutier Up And In
BUFFALO—It is said that a hockey team must learn to take the good with the bad. With that in mind, the Buffalo Sabres are likely to accept what’s happening to John Tucker. And welcome what’s happening to Jacques Cloutier. Tucker, one of the Sabres’ more talented players, began yet another comeback Dec. 19 in Memorial Auditorium. It lasted about a dozen shifts. Tucker, 23, was coming off a 16-game layoff with a knee injury when Montreal Canadien captain Bob Gainey took him into the boards. The force of the collision caused Tucker to suffer a mild separation of his right shoulder. It was his second major injury of the season and his-fourth in two years. Before this latest setback. Tucker had successfully rehabilitated himself after undergoing major back surgery. Before that, he suffered a separation…
Carlyle Became ‘Minister Without Portfolio’
WINNIPEG—It was an unfamiliar position to say the least, one Randy Carlyle hopes he must never get used to. Carlyle, once known around the Winnipeg Arena as the Jets’ ‘Minister of Defense,’ found himself presiding over a much lowlier station Dec. 18 at Northlands Coliseum in Edmonton. He was ‘Minister without Portfolio’—parked firmly at the end of the Winnipeg bench, where his main duty was opening and closing the gate. Carlyle, a former Norris Trophy winner as the league’s top defenseman and a veteran in his 12th NHL season, skated only once in the first two periods. But to his credit, he took the benching in stride, was a vocal leader on the bench and came back in the third period with his finest 20 minutes of hockey this season—a year in which…
