How Do Jets Spell Relief? OT Victory Against Oilers

WINNIPEG—If the hockey doctor had to prescribe a cure for the Winnipeg Jets’ recent slump, it probably wouldn’t have been a date with the high-flying Edmonton Oilers. But a visit to the Winnipeg Arena by the Stanley Cup champions proved to be exactly what the sagging Jets needed to break out of a five-game winless streak. Despite surrending a three-goal lead to Edmonton Nov. 22, the Jets came back to win 4-3 in overtime on a controversial goal by captain Dale Hawerchuk. Hawerchuk’s deflection of Dave Ellett’s wrist shot from the point—the Oilers claimed his stick was above shoulder height—came as welcome relief for the Jets. HOCKEY EAST Senior winger Gord Cruickshank was the driving force behind Providence College’s weekend sweep of Lowell (3-2) and Boston University (7-6). Dow Jones Would Love Quarter Like This

UNIONDALE, N.Y.—What a first quarter: A 14-5-1 record that was the NHL’s best; a three-point lead in the Patrick Division over New Jersey; and second place in the league’s overall standings. “Not bad,” New York Islander coach Terry Simpson deadpanned. “Three more like this and I’ll be pretty pleased.” The quarter ended spectacularly in the Spectrum Nov. 21, when the Islanders rallied from a4-1 deficit with five third-period goals and shocked the struggling Philadelphia Flyers 6-4. In a season filled with improbabilities, this was the most improbable. “I don’t believe this one,” Denis Potvin exclaimed. “In Philly?
