The Powerless Period
The reticence of National Hockey League referees to grant power plays in overtime during the playoffs is closer to refusal than reluctance. That much is indisputable after a THN survey of 109 overtime games, as listed in the NHL Official Guide and Record Book, during the 10 seasons from 1978 to 1987—including 11 games this year. There were several remarkable and revealing findings, perhaps none more so than the length of time since last an overtime man-advantage penalty was called during the NHL playoffs. As of May 11, it was more than three years ago—April 7, 1984. Forty-three overtime games ago. Nearly 352 cumulative minutes ago. The equivalent of almost six complete games without a power play. Crisis, what crisis? Talk to a National Hockey League official about this year’s Stanley Cup playoffs and he won’t even admit to a growing crescendo of controversy, never mind a Crisis. “This is tame,” maintains NHL director of officiating John McCauley. Tame, he insists, in spite of no fewer than six controversial goal-related calls, including: • An apparent St. Louis Blue goal by Mark Reeds disallowed in game two of a preliminary series with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
