Turgeon Still The One For NHL Scouts
It is a transaction that can take place only on paper. Swift Current Bronco left winger Peter Soberlak plays in the Western League; Oshawa General center Kevin Miehm in the Ontario League. Inter-league trading isn’t permitted, but Soberlak and Miehm have nevertheless exchanged places—on the National Hockey League Central Scouting Bureau’s final ratings list for the 1987 entry draft. The confidential rankings, obtained by THN. show Soberlak and Miehm to be among the biggest winners and losers in terms of changes from CSB’s ratings in February. The two players switched places, Soberlak moving from the No. 30 spot to No. 14 and Miehm, from 14 to 30. Of course, the ratings may ultimately prove to be insignificant. 10 YEARS AGO: • Following a WHA playoff victory by his Houston Aeros over Winnipeg Jets, Gordie Howe said he was “99 and 9/10 ths percent sure” he wasplaying his last season as a professional hockey player. In fact. Howe played three more seasons, including a brief return to the NHL as a member of the Hartford Whalers. When asked by reporter if the victory made him feel younger, the 49-year-old Howe replied, “I’m down to about 48 now.” • Jiggs McDonald, Atlanta Flames’ publicity director and play-by-play announcer, received harsh criticism for promoting Willi Plett as rookie of the year. His publicity campaign was successful, however. Plett won the Calder Trophy. • Glen Sather, now president, general manager and coach of the Edmonton Oilers, took the first step to that multi-tiered job…

THE STORY OUT of Pittsburgh said Paul Martha had “lost faith” in Bob Berry’s ability to get the Penguins into the playoffs. So he fired him. Let’s see, what else is new and exciting? My grass is growing again because it’s spring and I’m sure you’re all excited about that. A dog bit a guy down the street at about the same time Montreal eliminated Boston again. No news there.
