Field Still Large In Ranger Coaching Derby
NEW YORK—Scratch the names Wayne Cashman and Ed Giacomin from the New York Rangers’ coaching sweepstakes. General manager Phil Esposito has revealed that last year’s assistant coaches won’t be considered for the vacant head coaching job. but shed little other light on the situation. His list of candidates, he said, is a lot longer than most people would guess. “I’m doing a lot of research,” Esposito said from his Madison Square Garden office. “I’m in no hurry. This is a very important decision for our organization. “I won’t make any kind of a decision until I interview eight to 10 people. Then, maybe we’ll bring back four or five for a second interview and then, two or three for a third.” Although Esposito was pleased with the work of Cashman and Giacomin as assistants,…
Netminding Turns Shaky On Habs
MONTREAL—When the 1987 regular season ended, Patrick Roy was adamant about the Montreal Canadiens’ expectations for repeating as National Hockey League champions. “I don’t want to watch the Stanley Cup playoffs on television,” Roy said. The complexion of the Wales Conference final changed quickly from games two to four. The Canadiens returned triumphantly from Philadelphia after splitting the first two games of the…

Before the puck is dropped, the GM appears a perfectly rational human being, capable of carrying on basic social functions. Well, most of them… But as soon as the game begins, the GM is transformed into a raving, foaming-at-the-mouth maniac, who also just happens to be a paranoid schizophrenic to boot. He’ll bang his fist on the counter top, he’ll spew obscenities. He may even toss chairs, jump up and down, turn crimson and storm along the press box runway. And that’s at an exhibition game. Come playoff time, it gets downright dirty. Or at least it did the night during this year’s Stanley Cup playoffs…
