Unlikely Sharpshooter Leads Wing Revival
DETROIT—Joe Kocur is a hockey player without a home—figuratively speaking, of course. While most players thrive in the home environment, Kocur’s heart—and goals—are on the road. And if Kocur had a choice of National Hockey League arenas to call home, it would be a good bet he’d single out Maple Leaf Gardens. Kocur, with only five goals in his previous 47 games this year, scored a pair as the Red Wings defeated Toronto 4-2 at the Gardens. Ontario Saves Faces With Victoru—Finally
OTTAWA—Finally, an all-star victory for the Ontario League over the Quebec League. After losing both games of last year’s Challenge Cup between the two leagues, and game one of this year’s event, the OHL rebounded in the second game for a 5-4 overtime victory in Hull. Quebec won the first game, 7-4 in Ottawa, and took last year’s games by 11-4 and 6-5 scores. Goaltending was the difference in the first game this year. Quebec’s Jimmy Waite made 35 saves, including 17 in the final period, when the OHL launched a frantic bid to overcome a 5-2 deficit. “No question, Jimmy Waite was the star of the opener,” said Ontario coach Paul Theriault. “He made the big saves right from the start and allowed his team to open up.” Waite, a member of the Chicoutimi…
