Hockey Always Been Fun For Smith

As a youngster in Ottawa, Bobby Smith had a simple formula for hockey success—enjoy the game and play as much as you can. “I played an awful lot of organized hockey,” the Montreal Canadiens’ star center recalls. He started at age seven, playing house league every Saturday morning. In between, he and his friends would spend every spare moment playing outdoor shinny. “I just spent countless hours on the outdoor rinks with the neighborhood kids,” he says. Through sheer volume of practice, his skating developed quickly. Keans Shows His Stuff In Starter’s Role

BOSTON—No. I goalies come and go in Boston but Doug Keans, backup goalie extraordinaire, seems to go on forever. In fact, there were those who were calling him the No. 1 goalie for the Bruins after he went unbeaten in six games (4-0-2), including a near shutout performance against the Buffalo Sabres, an Adams Division rival who had taken seven of eight points from the Bruins in their first four meetings. Norm Lacombe scored for the Sabres with 40 seconds left and Adam Creighton scored at 19:59 to reduce the shutout to a 6-2 Boston victory.
