Scoreless Draw Reaffirms Hab Style Of Play
MONTREAL—It took the Stanley Cup champions six days to redeem themselves defensively. Less than a week after the Montreal Canadiens were embarrassed 7-4 in a season-opening loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs, they played to a 0-0 draw with the Buffalo Sabres. It was the first time since Dec. 21, 1968 that Montreal had been involved in such a game. On that particular evening, Gerry Cheevers was in goal for the Boston Bruins and at the other end of the Forum ice was Tony Esposito. Guy Carbonneau was all of eight years old and may have been watching the game in his hometown of Sept-Iles, Que. This time around, he was a key player along with the goaltenders—Patrick Roy of the Canadiens and Tom Barrasso of Buffalo—in the scoreless encounter. “That’s the way we want…
A Victim Of The System: Yaremchuk Sent To Saints
THE YOUNG MAN never dreamed of being a Maple Leaf and, as fate would have it, the Maple Leafs’ wildest dreams did not include him either. Be patient, he was told countless times, and, with an impressive training camp and a bit of luck, better things might lie ahead. But at high noon one summer’s Sunday, the 22-year-old was told he was to be a Toronto Maple Leaf. “Strange things have happened, that’s for sure,” Yaremchuk…

Hockey Refs Are The Best Of Officiating Brotherhood
IN THE PAST few years, there has been a good deal of criticism of National Hockey League referees. There have even been some commentators moved to suggest that referees are the root of all the NHL’s problems. Somehow, this always seemed a bit odd to me. Like everyone else. I’d seen referees make the odd mistake. But astonishing as it may seen, I’d also seen the odd mistake made by journalists (not many, of course) and the newspaper business didn’t seem to be suffering any undue hardship. No referee was running around shouting that journalists were the root of all the publishing industry’s woes. Anyway, it was apparent that a look at the refereeing in other sports couldn’t do any harm, just to see if hockey referees were as bad as some…
