King Hones It Will Be ‘New’ Age For Nats
For Dave King, age is more than a state of mind—it is a measuring stick against which he considers his Canadian national team. A team too young, for instance, could be a time too bad for King at the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary. He has learned that from ex-perience. “I’d really be excited if our average age was, say 22-23,” says King. “I don’t know if it could be that high or not. “We’d love to have an average age of 23-24 if we can get there. But that will be a challenge. We don’t want to be as young as we were in ’84 when we were just about 20.1-20.2. “We had five or six junior players. That’s a lot of young players.” It’s also all but certain to be more than the Olympic…

Scouting Out Best And Worst Of NHL Cities
My first hockey road trip lasted six weeks. The Kansas City Scouts trained in Port Huron, Mich., then had to open with eight games on the road as Kemper Arena was being finished. No wife, no kids, my first fulltime professional assignment and a six-week, all-expenses paid tour of places and arenas I had only dreamed about visiting. I couldn’t believe the Kansas City Star was paying me to do this. My priorities were firmly arranged, so 1 wasted no time getting started. The first day of camp, Bep Guidolin told me the Scouts could make the playoffs. His mistake was not under-standing that I would have believed him with-out the five margaritas he ordered for me. My mistake was drinking them. I was sitting in the first row of the stands the…

Just Like Starting Over Again For Turcotte
HALIFAX—A comeback at 21? Alfie Turcotte says it’s in the cards. At an age when most players are just beginning to establish themselves in the National Hockey League, Turcotte is starting over. With a new team, the benefit of maturity, the luxury of hindsight and an upbeat approach, Turcotte believes he is ready to begin the climb back toward the top. An off-season trade sent Turcotte, Montreal’s first-round draft pick in 1983, to the Edmonton Oilers. It freed him from the frustration built up in three forgetable seasons with the Canadiens and presented the sizeable challenge of moving from the Stanley Cup-winning organization to the most talented club in the league. As he expected would happen, Turcotte was assigned by Edmonton to the American League Nova Scotia Oilers. “This year, I’ve got a better…
