Pelawa Won’t Soon Be Forgotten
Just as suddenly as George Pelawa ippeared he was gone. Nine weeks after stealing the show at the National Hockey league entry draft—purely because of his size and strength—Pelawa died in a two-car collision six kilometres north of Bemidji, Minn., his hometown. Pelawa. 18, was a passenger in a car driven by his 19-year-old brother Joseph, when it collided with another vehicle at about 2 a.m. on Aug. 30. The younger Pelawa severed the venacava artery and bled to death. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Sheriff Orielle Norland of Beltrami County said no drugs or liquor were found in either vehicle, but his department wouldn’t “rule them out” until they received the test results back from the laboratory. Blood samples were taken from both drivers but results weren’t expected until Sept.…
Flyers Karin’ To Go For 20th Year
PHILADELPHIA—Depending upon your point of view. 20 years can seem like an eternity, or just a speck of time. People such as Philadelphia Flyer owner Ed Snider, and club vicepresident Keith Allen can think back and have it all unfold as if it had happened just yesterday. In 20 years, the Flyers have developed into one of the glamour teams in pro sports. In a matter of 20 years, they took the curse away from the term “expansion team”, and whisked the curse of “loser” away from the city of Philadelphia. This 1986-87 season will mark the Flyers’ 20th anniversary and that of four other (existing) teams who joined the NHL in 1967-68. The club will commemorate the occasion with a specially-designed patch, but that patch won’t be able to capture all the…
Horse Owner Betting Longshot On Kings
LOS ANGELES—Millionaire Bruce McNall has made a habit out of turning fool’s gold—or is it fools’ gold?—into a financial network that includes a stable of thoroughbreds, a film production corporation, an art gallery, and a stamp and coin brokerage company. McNall has a knack for knowing where to put his dollars. At the age of 36, his investments have enabled him to purchase homes in Beverly Hills, Westwood and Malibu—all fashionable Southern California locales. He even has his own plane. “I’ve always had pretty good success at knowing when to make a buy,” he said. “That’s the whole key, getting into something that appears to have hit the bottom but in your mind is actually just about ready to take off.” Only a crazed man, it seems, would care to take the plunge in…
Lineups Of Finalists Blend Of Old And New
GLENS FALLS—Last season’s Calder Cup finalists will have decidedly different looks when the 1986-87 American League season gets under way next month. Both the Adirondack Red Wings and Hershey Bears, winners of the Northern and Southern Division titles, respectively, in 1985-86, have undergone significant personnel changes since the conclusion of the playoffs May 21 at the Glens Falls Civic Center. Although both clubs are likely to have a number of familiar, players returning and both figure to be contenders once again, they have been affected by a turnover of players this summer. Adirondack, which won its second Calder Cup title by beating the Bears in six games, was the hardest hit of the two. At least 10 and possibly 14 players from the championship team will not be back. The group includes four who…
