Jets Expected To Make Alterations

WINNIPEG—Randy Carlyle bounced across the floor of Winnipeg Arena, carrying three boxes of doughnuts for his Jets’ teammates, some of whom were meeting for the last time. Thomas Steen had already left for Moscow, responding to Sweden’s invitation to join his national team at the World Championships. Dale Hawerchuk would be catching a later flight to the same destination at the heed of Canada. “My back feels a little better,” said Carlyle, lifting the shroud of secrecy off the mysterious injury that caused him to miss the playoffs. Carlyle dismissed rumors that his back had been injured in a particularly rough landing in Calgary or during horseplay with teammate Bobby Dollas. “I noticed it for the first time as I got up after lunch the day we left for the airport,” he said. “Four or…

Team History Of Little Solace To Rangers

NEW YORK—Were the Rangers headed down the road to Shakeup City again, or, was there a chance they’d find their way to that well known sanctuary for under-achievers. Upset Village? Through the gloom of a 7-1 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers at Madison Square Garden on April 13, rookie coach Ted Sator was still insisting that his underdog team was on the right course. “Hopefully,” Sator suggested after the Flyers had fought off elimination and sent the best-of-five series back to Philadelphia tied at 2-2, “as long as we’re heading south, the next stop will be Washington.” While Sator’s sense of direction seemed intact, the Flyers threw up a massive roadblock in Game Four, driving New York’s playoff hero, John Vanbies-brouck, from the nets with five goals in a span of 9:33. Although their…

Squad Improved But Not Enough

PITTSBURGH—Every National Hockey League team has a favorite city, be it Calgary because of relatives or New York because of the revelry. But it is to be understood that the Pittsburgh Penguins, to a man, have stricken Winnipeg from the list of cities they most enjoy. For it was there, nearly a month before the NHL’s regular season officially expired, that the Penguins’ 1985-86 season realistically ended. Midway through the second period of a seemingly undistinguished game, the Penguins were leading 1-0 when refere Bob Myers assessed Jets’ center Laurie Boschman a five-minute penalty for high sticking. The Penguins believed, reasonably enough, that power play would enable them to build up a substantial lead and break a two-game losing streak. But by the time that penalty had ex-pired, so, in retrospect, had the Penguins’ playoff…
