Brown’s Bombing Raids Sets Club Ablaze
KAMLOOPS—A sticky situation? No problem, Rob Brown of the Kamloops Blazers just stickhandles around it. Whether it be pressure from an opposition defenseman or probing questions from the Western League media. Brown usually comes out the winner. It was that way again Feb. 27 when Brown, a crafty 17-year-old center, was named the Blazers’ nominee for player-’ of-the-year honors. Brown, a 5-foot-ll, 175-pound St. Albert, Alta., native, has done everything possible to fuel the Blazers’ drive for a third consecutive Western Division title. And at the same time the blond bomber’s stock has risen for the National Hockey League entry draft in June. Brown, a transplanted defenseman, was the WHL scoring leader with 48 goals and 100 assists for 148 points. If he maintains the lead—Brown held a 14-point edge on Simon Wheeldon of…
Pavelich’s Future Unclear With N.Y. Rangers
NEW YORK—Mark Pavelich, it would seem, had a premonition of impending problems. As the National Hockey League trading deadline approached, Pavelich was “scratched” from the New York Rangers’ lineup for two straight games and rumors were circulating that the 28-year-old center was seriously considering retirement. Ranger general manager Craig Patrick would neither confirm nor deny that Pavelich was considering such a step on March 9 but admitted that there were some “problems” that required special attention. The Rangers’ leading goal scorer (37) in 1983-83 and their top point producer (82) in 1983-84, Pavelich suffered a broken ankle in the second game of the 1984-85 season and was limited to 48 games. Although he came back strong physically this fall, he expressed doubts about “fitting in” under rookie coach Ted Sator’s dump-and-chase style and those…
The Goose Migrates To Fredericton Express
QUEBEC CITY—Surprise! Surprise! Minutes before their game against the St. Louis Blues at Le Colisee on March 4, the slump-ridden Quebec Nordiques stunned everyone by assigning goaltender Mario Gosselin to the Fredericton Express of the American League. Gosselin, the National Hockey League’s player of the month in October, reported immediately to head coach Andre Savard and was to spend about 10 days in the minors. “After discussing the matter with Maurice (Nords’ general manager Filion) and Michel (coach Bergeron), I decided it would be in my best interest to report to the Express for four or five games,” said Gosselin. “I’m having a hard time getting back into shape because I’m not playing that much. In fact, I’ve hardly played at all since Christmas. So it isn’t surprising that I’m battling the puck when…
