Trade Tugs On Babych’s Hart(ford)-Strings

HARTFORD WHALERS HARTFORD—Down deep, all the Winnipeg Jets really expected from Dave Babych was everything. And, much like Mark Howe in Hartford, Babych failed to deliver. When Winnipeg made Babych the second overall selection in the 1980 draft, general manager John Ferguson look one look at the 6-foot-2, 215-pound defenseman and called him “our franchise.” That was a mistake. More than five years later, Ferguson traded Babych, 24, to Hartford for right winger Ray Neufeld. 26, in a straight one-for-one deal. “There’s no question that I felt some pressure in Winnipeg,” said Babych, who had one goal and three assists in his first four games with the Whalers. “To me, you build a franchise piece by piece. Whaler Owners Looking For An Even Break

Louisville Hockey Louisville Hockey BINGHAMTON—They’re not the butcher, the baker and the candlestick ker. but the three local businessmen who took over ownership of the Binghamton Whalers already know how hard it is to cut the fat in the bright lights of this proud professional franchise. The new kids on the block are Bob Carr, printing shop owner, Tom Mitchell. ex-hockey player and owner of a 25-year-old steel fabricating business, and Jim McCoy, restaurant owner. “Our major problem is that all three of us own our own businesses,” said Carr. sometimes, I wish one of us could devote all of his time fully to the hockey team. “I knew I couldn’t do it alone. I’m happy to be in the business. I’ve learned an awful lot. We’ve been fairly successful up to now, working steadily…

Little lannone A Big Scorer For The Pats

Louisville Hockey Louisville Hockey REGINA—This isn’t the tale of two brothers but it might as well be. Tim lannone is a natural goal scorer for the Regina Pats. Well into the 198586 Western Hockey League season, the 19-year-old left winger was among the league leaders in scoring. The third-year player is 5-foot-9 and 170 pounds. Chris lannone is 6-foot-1,210 pounds. He’s not a gifted sniper and he doesn’t possess his brother’s moves. In fact, Chris doesn’t even play hockey. Had it been a different story in the lannone’s Regina household, Tim lannone might be the prized property of a National Hockey League club. Yet, it isn’t so for the smooth forward who joins a long line of diminutive WHL gunners such as former Brandon Wheat King Kelly Glowa who don’t measure up in the eyes of…
