THE YEAR IN REVIEW-QUOTES AND NOTES
From the hockey highs of Gretzky and Friends to the lows of Lindbergh, 1985 was a year of joy and heartbreak. The Edmonton Oilers, Philadelphia Flyers and a host of other teams throughout the hockey world gave us thrills…while the passing of time took away Foster Hewitt, Eddie Shore and Frank Selke and hands of fate robbed us of Pelle Lindbergh. It was a year like no other. THE HOCKEY NEWS offers a look back: JANUARY “It’s great. We come over here and we do it in their rink, with all of the problems with the refereeing, and all the other problems. Heck, this is the Soviets backyard.” —Sherry Bassin, Team Canada manager. Canada, coached by Terry Simpson, won the World Junior Championships in Helsinki on the basis of goal differential. Both Canada and Czechoslovakia, who…
Beliveau Is Reminder Of Game’s Positive Side
FAN FORUM Let your voice be heard! Send your comments to Fan Forum, THE HOCKEY NEWS, 85 Scarsdale Rd., Suite 100, Don Mills, Ontario, Canada M3B 2R2. THN reserves the right to edit all submissions. FAR TOO OFTEN we emphasize the negative aspects of hockey, without realizing that positive things happen. Since 1976. I have come to know Jean Beliveau through correspondence. He is the positive focus of this letter. As a parish priest, I have visited the sick, handicapped, lonely and shut-in on my rounds, many of whom are hockey fans. When asked, Mr. Beliveau has gone out of his way to send these folks small souvenirs. I cannot tell you how much this contact has cheered these people and built up their morale. Le Gros Bill exuded class both on and off…
Middleton Searches For ‘Old-Time’ Feeling
Louisville Hockey Louisville Hockey BOSTON BRUINS BOSTON—”If felt like old times,” said Rick Middleton, at 32 now the oldest of the Boston Bruins. “It’s been an up-and-down season. But a night like this helps the old confidence. Contributing to a win puts you on a high.” What Middleton did was contribute a goal, his third of the season and first in 15 games, and one of the patented assists, which have long brought fans out of their seats, to a 4-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils. It had been a long time. “I’m sure this will do a lot for him and for his confidence,” said coach Butch Goring. “This kind of a game can do you a world of good when you’re struggling.” Middleton, once a 50-goaI scorer for the Bruins, has been struggling for…
Olympiques Aim For Memorial Cup
HULL—If the Hull Olympiques aren’t a team going all out to win the Memorial Cup this season, then they’ve got an awful lot of people fooled…including their own coach. Entering the second week of December, the Olympiques led the Quebec League with a 25-10 record and had regained their early-season form (nine wins in 11 games) by winning eight straight contests. Hull’s record also included a leagueleading 14-3 mark on the road. Seven of the team’s 10 losses were by one goal. “Definitely, there’s no doubt about it…we want to go all the way this year,” said Hull coach Pat Bums. If the Olympiques are to get there, he will deserve much of the credit. The 33-year-old veteran of 14 years on the Gatineau police force took a one-year leave from his work as…
