End Results Of CCHA Predictions

SAULT STE. MARIE—Prior to the start of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, this reporter stuck his neck out and made some predictions. The end results showed three right, three almost right and three not even close. Michigan State was picked to run away with the regular-season title, which it did in January. Western Michigan was slated to finish runner-up to MSU, but placed two spots back in third. The other bullseyes had Ohio State in sixth and Miami University eighth. Ferris State, however, was not even close. Picked for third, the Bulldogs struggled early and never did right themselves. They sank in a sea of 12 consecutive losses to end the season and finished dead last, the only CCHA team out of the playoffs. It was a woeful season for Dick Bertrand and his players. Even captain…

Millen Makes Good In Debut With Blues

ST. LOUIS BLUES ST. LOUIS—The reaction of fans was mixed in St. Louis on Feb. 22, when the Blues traded goalie Mike Liut and future considerations to the Hartford Whalers for forward Mark Johnson and goalie Greg Millen. Some fans welcomed the trade on the theory that it would make the Blues a better team, others were sad to see an old favorite such as Liut go. But even the skeptics had to be impressed on Feb. 27, when Millen played brilliantly in his debut with the Blues. He stopped 33 shots and was named the game’s No. 1 star after the Blues defeated Buffalo 3-1 at the Arena. “It was the best performance I’ve seen since Liut in last year’s playoffs,” said defenseman Tim Bothwell. Marshall Switched Style To Fit Canadiens’ Needs

Utility player is a term usually connected with baseball. It refers to a player who can play in almost any position at any time during a game. Former National Hockey League center-left winger Don Marshall could have been considered a utility player during his playing days with the Montreal Canadiens. Marshall played in all or parts of 19 seasons (1951-52, 1954-72) with the Canadiens, New York Rangers, Buffalo Sabres and Toronto Maple Leafs. Although he was known as an offensive-minded player during his junior and minor-league days, Marshall had to change his thinking once he was with the Canadiens. “Montreal had a lot of offensive-minded players on the team at the time I joined them,” said Marshall. “When I became a member of the team the coaches thought I would make a better contribution…
