Rangers Aren’t Any Better After Road Trip
NEW YORK RANGERS NEW YORK—In a coming issue of Goal magazine, jazz flutist Herbie Mann speaks eloquently of the similarity between his profession and hockey. There is “an organization to what they guys were doing on the ice, but still room for an individual to do his own thing,” explains Mann, a Ranger fan since the ’40s and a season-ticket holder at Madison Square Garden. However, after the first period of the Ranger-Buffalo game on Jan. 16 at the Garden, Mann had a decidely different view. Chrysler Rookie Spotlight
The Quebec Nordiques round the answer to their power-play problems when they started using defenseman Bruce Bell on the point. Bell, 19, is no stranger to this specialty squad, as he manned the right side for the Brantford Alexanders of the Ontario Hockey League last season. The Nordiques, however, are using Bell on the left side, but the youngster was made the transition as if he’d be playing there for years. Bell, drafted by the Nordiques in the second round in 1983, came to training camp expecting to be returned to junior. But the Nordiques were too impressed to send him back, and after 41 games the is proving why, with three goals and 21 assists, with a plus-18 rating, tops among NHL rookies.
