Behrend Paid Attention In School
WINNIPEG—What will Marc Behrend remember about his first National Hockey League shutout? The big goaltender grinned as he thought about the question for a few seconds. “I guess the happiest thing for me is the fact another guy from my hometown was playing for the Whalers,” said the 23-year-old product of Madison, WI. Behrend had stopped 29 shots, five of them by another Madison native, Mark Johnson, as the Winnipeg Jets extended their mastery over the Hartford Whalers to seven games with a 3-0 victory in the Civic Center. They came armed with a plan that has served them well in Denver and has had a positive impact on the Calgary Hames. It’s a simple approach, something that most National Hockey League teams have tried to do in the past five years: move out the veterans who aren’t producing and bring in the kids. Calgary wrote…
Wilkinson Looks For Key To Consistency
KALAMAZOO—It was about four in the morning and an hour north of Kalamazoo on Highway 131 when the Western Michigan University team bus was forced off the black top to avoid collision with an unoccupied auto, lying upside down in the middle of the road. So concluded another Central Collegiate Hockey Association road trip for the topsy-turvy Broncos, who were expected to start strong and finish in the top two come March. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” says Western coach Bill Wilkinson. “Most of our guys were asleep. There was this car, upside down, right in the middle of the highway. Next thing we know, we’re braking and swerving. There was nobody in or with the car. Nobody got hurt, but I wouldn’t want to do it ever again.” Granted, the season…
