T-Birds Place Big Priority On Stopping Other Team
WINSTOM-SALEM—A strong defense is the topic widely discussed among politicians, but hockey coaches also have a vested interest in that subject. The Carolina Thunderbirds are a case in point. With only a week to get ready for the start of the Atlantic Coast Hockey League season, a strong defense was a priority of coach Rick Dudley and his assistant Jim Warden, and the results paid of quickly. With several key veterans returning on the backline, the Thunderbirds were able to jump to the spot they’ve called home much of the past two—first place. “Going into the season, we knew that defensemen were going to be hard to find, so it was by design that we returned so many veterans on defense,” said Warden. “We were anticipating rookie defensemen being on the weak side…

HULL—It’s almost time for the Canadian Major Junior Hockey League teams to put their best players forward and get ready for the World Junior championships. Now the last time we left this group, all was not sweetness and light. The Quebec League, which sends its best, along with those from the Western and Ontario major junior leagues, to create the national junior team, was upset. So upset it was ready to withdraw from the national program. The cause for discussion and argument was the team selected by Brian Kilrea, then coach of the Baby Nats and Ottawa 67s.
