You’d Smile Too If You Had Mason’s Team

EAST LANSING—You’ll have to excuse Ron Mason if he just can’t seem to vipe the smile off his face these days. You see. Mason is head hockey coach at Michigan State University here, and he’s about to delve into season No. 7 at MSU with as awesome a collection of collegiate hockey talent as any coach has a right to claim. Deep is the best word to describe this season’s Spartans. No, make that very deep. Enormously deep. Check just about any poll these days. He started 17 straight games, went 13 without a loss, recorded three straight shutouts on the road and set a club record…

What’s happened in Ottawa to the 67s, who started the season with a 1-3-1 record under new coach Cliff Stewart after five straight seasons with more than 40 wins, capped by the Memorial Cup victory last May under Brian Kilrea? Obviously, time is the only measuring stick. But for now, the traditional doormats, Sudbury Wolves, were off and howling with a 4-1-1 record as they try to restore hockey credibility in their northern city under new coach Andy…
