BEDCLOTHES
Dark Side Of Bentley MURRAY KEMPTON, A New York journalist of distinction, has said, “It is probably an illusion that any one man much alters history even in the short run and it is certainly a fact that history crushes every man in the long…” That seems as perceptive as one can be about the human condition. So those who mourn the death of Max Bentley may be left only with illusions. Was he the best third-string center who ever graced the National Hockey League? Perhaps. Was he the best third-string center who ever played for the Toronto Maple Leafs? I think so. But those of us who remember Bentley—especially my HOCKEY NEWS colleagues. Joe Falls, Frank Orr and Stan Fischler—are remembering from more than 30 years ago. In perspective, those days seem more incandescent than…

COMING SOONIN THN
Next Week One of the more remarkable stories of this NHL season has been the resurgence of New York Ranger center Pierre Larouche, who a year ago seem destined for the scrap heap. But he’s taken The Big Apple by storm and we’ll have an in-depth interview with the man many believe is the reason the Rangers are Stanley Cup contenders. We’ll also get Hartford Whaler president Emile Francis’ reaction to the the turn of events since it was Francis who let Larouche go for nothing. And on top of all that, we’ll look at the catch-phrase “1940” and how it symbolizes everything evil for a Ranger rooter. Don’t miss it. March 16 The Washington Capitals are a serious Stanley Cup contender this season, thanks to the efforts of players such as Dave Christian.…

Sabre Bachelors Prefer It Ruff And Tough
BUFFALO—They live together in the suburbs but they haven’t been able to play together much this season. Mike Ramsey and Lindy Ruff are two of the Sabres’ biggest, roughest and toughest players but this season they have been in the lineup together only about half the time. Coach Scotty Bowman hopes to have both physically fit for the stretch run of the season and the Stanley Cup playoffs. If he does, the Sabres should do even better than they have been doing lately. What the Sabres have been doing lately isn’t bad. When the Boston Bruins came to town, the Sabres trounced them 7-4 to open their lead in the Adams Division to five points over Boston. Ruff, a left winger and former defenseman, was hurt in the second game of the season and…

ON THE CONTRARY
True Blue Stan I DON’T MIND telling you how miffed I am about the Americans winning the Black-and-Blue hockey medal at Sarajevo. No, I’m not angry at Lou Vairo, who now joins Scotty Bowman, Lester Patrick, Herb Brooks, Al Arbour and Harry Sinden among coaches who have lost hockey games in their lifetime. Louis did his best; no more, no less. He lost without weeping, hiding, moping or making excuses. You can’t ask more of a guy whether he’s from Brooklyn or Brantford. The jokers I’m angry with are the perfect-vision people; those who see things clearly and see them whole and tell you what will happen after the event is over. For these optical wonders, I have one message; take a hike. Now I will get to specifics. To begin with, Mike Lupica of the New…
