For much of last season, Saskatoon Blade right winger Lane Lambert was rated as a first-round pick in the 1983 NHL entry draft. As draft day approached, though, his rating dipped and when the Detroit Red Wings selected him, it was 25th overall and in the second round. Still, he made the team in training camp and has become a regular with the Wings, perhaps overshadowed by the offensive exploits of teammate Steve Yzerman. But the 19-year-old still managed 13 goals and 11 assists in 54 games while giving the Wings a solid defensive effort.…

Dietrich Knew The Chance He Was Taking

SPRINGFIELD—He would have preferred to play for the Canadian Olympic team, but defenseman Don Dietrich has resigned himself to being a member of the Springfield Indians. “Sure, I’m very disappointed I didn’t get to play,” said the 22-year-old Dietrich, who was ruled ineligible by the International Olympic Committee on the eve of the 1984 Winter Olympic Games because he played six games in the National Hockey League with the Chicago Black Hawks. “I wanted to play quite a bit. It was a chance of a lifetime, to represent my country.” Dietrich was unhappy, but he wasn’t angry with the ruling that prevented him from competing with a hungry Canadian team that has surprised many people by qualifying for the medal round. “We were all aware of the chance we were taking,” Dietrich said.…
