Federko Gets His Christmas Presents Early
ST. LOUIS—Everything was happening so fast and going so well for Bernie Federko, it seemed almost like a dream. On the night of Dec. 13, Federko scored a goal and added an assist for the Blues in a 4-1 win over the visiting Chicago Black Hawks. The goal was his 19th of the season and the assist was his 25 th. At the rate he was going, Federko would finish the season with a career high 50 goals and 66 assists for a career-high 116 points. In seven previous National Hockey League seasons, his highs have been 38 goals, 78 assists and 104 points. But more important, Federko’s second-period goal, which gave the Blues a 2-0 lead, was his 576th career point. He’s now the Blues’ all-time scoring leader, surpassing Garry Unger. Even more…
Vees Take Another Route To Stay On Top
H&B 100 YEARS Louisville Hockey HALIFAX—Although they have taken a slightly different route, the Nova Scotia Voyageurs are back in a familiar position—first place in the American Hockey League’s Northern Division. Instead of using high-powered offensive outbursts, coach John Brophy’s Vees have turned to balanced scoring, strong defense and outstanding goaltending as their ingredients for success this season. Through their first 31 games of the season, the Vees had fashioned a 16-9-6 record, thanks to a 3.26 goals-against average, the best in the league. The record gave them a six-point edge over both Moncton and Adirondack and a seven-point advantage over Fredericton. Goaltenders Mark Holden and Steve Penney are both in the midst of outstanding campaigns and can share part of the credit for taking the Vees to the top. Holden has a 10-4-4 record…
Rogers’ Defense Complements Offense
NEW YORK—Through the Rangers’ defensive ups-and-downs this season—and in mid-December, the emphasis was decidedly on the latter—Mike Rogers has stood out with steady, twoway play. This is quite a switch for a center who scored a total of 313 points in his first three National Hockey League seasons, including 38 goals and 65 assists for 103 points in his first year as a Ranger two seasons ago. Last season, with a mediocre second half, his output plummeted to 29-4776. He lost to the Rangers in contract arbitration over the summer and found himself competing in training camp with three potentially high-scoring centers—the newly-arrived Pierre Larouche, Mike Allison (who was later sidelined by a knee injury) and Mark Pavelich. Little wonder, then, that his personal goal going into this season was the improvement of…
