NEW YORK—Early in his Ranger eer, Steve Weeks gave the goalies’ e-view on preventing goals: “It esn’t matter how well the statistics ok. Everything stops with the goal-der,” Whether the puck does or doesn’t stop re is a function of the support a netminder receives from the men in front of. In turn, the effectiveness of the defense, hinges on the help they receive the forwards. Early in the Rangers’ reason, when they ran up a 9-1 record, defense did a magnificent job of proting the goalies, keeping the slot clear and giving them the view they needed of it vital first shot on net. No Looking Back For Kings’ MacLellan

Most kids in Canada begin skating at ages three or four—sometimes younger—but when Brian MacLellan’s friends were on the ice, he was in a leg brace, hampered by a disease that doctors said would paralyze him by age 21. Today, MacLellan is a healthy 24-year-old who has not only survived a rare disease, but has skated his way through the youth hockey leagues of Guelph, Ont., to U.S. collegiate hockey at Bowling Green University and now to the pinnacle of the sport as a promising player with the National Hockey League’s Los Angeles Kings. A MESSAGE TO OUR READERS

We’re Adding Three More Issues A Year Effective with the Nov. 25th, 1983, issue of THE HOCKEY NEWS, the terms and subscription rates will increase. The one-season term increases from 37 issues to 40 issues each year. This increase in term is the direct result of an expressed desire of our readers who want more coverage of the sport. In 1984, issues will be added in August and September and the second July issue—the statistical wrap-up—will again be included in the annual subscription package. On a per copy basis, the rate increase for the one-year term is less than six per cent or about three cents per copy. The current subscription rate of $19.95 for 37 issues will increase to $22.95 for 40 issues. The newsstand price of the paper will remain at $1.50 per…
