Calgary Olympic Plans Hit Rough Spots

The date was Sept. 30, the year 1981. On that day, Calgary lost its tag as the Stampede city. On that day, it became the Olympic city. Now, more than two years after the fact, Calgary prepares for the 1988 Winter Olympics, attempting to leave the problems of such centers as Montreal and Lake Placid behind, but finding that problems are most difficult to avoid. It was in Baden Baden, West Germany, where Calgary was awarded the Games and at that time its bid was considered the finest ever. Cap Expectations Turn To Disappointment

WASHINGTON—After a giddy exhibition campaign in which they played 10 National Hockey League opponents without losing, the Capitals entered the regular season with every expectation of getting off to a fast start. Unfortunatley, it didn’t turn out that way.” Owner Mike Hitch dolled up Joe Louis Arena for the 1983-84 opener and a record crowd (for an opener) of 18,956 showed up for the first live look at the new Red Wings. For 20 minutes, it wasn’t a bad show. Then the New Jersey Devils scored four straight goals and goaltender Ron Low, a former Red Wing, made them stand up for a 6-3 victory over Detroit. This one was over after the first period when the Wings dominated the play but came up…
