The Oilers’ Year? THE EXPERIENCE WAS one that tends to teach young men humility and firm up their resolve. Edmonton Oilers look on it that way. While the fenders were knocked off their pride when the New York Islanders swept them out of the 1983 Stanley Cup final, the Oilers haven’t heaved in any towels. Instead, they’re digging in to guarantee a return bout next May and are looking for improvements in the areas exposed by the Islanders as weaknesses. Ask most hockey fans around the National Hockey League the match-up they would like to see if their own clubs can’t be involved and the majority would say that the Islanders and Oilers are the choice. Neither club has made any major changes to open the 1983-84 season. Both teams have excellent youngsters ready…

Player Of The Week

If the St. Louis Blues are going to be a Norris Division contender this season, and they’re showing every sign that they are, then their fortunes rest on netminder Mike Liut’s shoulders. So far this season, that’s good news for the Blues, since Liut is off to a great start. For the week ending Oct. 16, Liut won all three games he started, 3-2 over Vancouver, 7-4 over Los Angeles and 6-5 over the New York Rangers, and earned HOCKEY NEWS’ Player of the Week honors. In five games this season, Liut has a 4-1 record, a 3.20 goals-against average and an amazing save percentage of .890, displaying the quality goalkeeping that made him an all-star two seasons ago.…
