THE WESTERN WORD
NHL Injustice RIC NATTRESS WAS having a terrific training camp. At least, that’s the way Serge Savard put it. Ric Nattress will not have a terrific season with the Montreal Canadiens. He may not even play a game. In the world of National Hockey League justice, Nattress has been suspended for the 1983-84 season because, two summers ago, he was caught with three grams of marijuana and one gram of hashish. Soft drugs, they are called. The type one will find at almost any party you attend these days. But still, illegal drugs. The courts of Canada fined Nattress $150 for being caught with these drugs, the current street value of which is approximately $30. But in his ultimate wisdom, the President of the NHL, John Ziegler, had deemed this to be much more…

FAN FORUM
DESPERATE IN DALLAS A review of the list of the towns which get to view NHL pre-season games becomes extremely depressing reading for those of us in Dallas. While the powers that be in the NHL seem to have written off Dallas a viable marketplace, they could at least give us an opportunity to see one pre-season game. I might note that in the October 1983 issues of Dallas, a magazine of the Dallas Chamber of Commerce, it is noted that the manager of Reunion Arena, Jack Beckman, has stated that he “hopes to add new events to the schedule, such as pre-season ice hockey…” Reunion Arena is the home of the Dallas Mavericks of the NBA. Hopefully, some day, when the powers that be in the NHL wake up, it will also…

Adirondack Red Wings
The news story in November of 1978 sent sportswriters, hockey officials and fans across the continent reaching for their maps. Glens Falls, NY? Where is Glens Falls and how could it possibly be the site of an American Hockey League franchise? The report seemed preposterous, totally unbelievable. Yet, there it was in black type on the front page of the Post-Star, the daily newspaper in Glens Falls, that the Detroit Red Wings were prepared to move their minor-league farm team from Kansas City to the small upstate new York City. Less than 12 hours after Post-Star editors studied journalism textbooks on the proper procedure to copyright a story, the wire services were relaying the news to media in Canada and the U.S. The disbelievers greatly outnumbered those who thought the idea would…

Drummondville’s Ward Redefines Goals
Louisville Hockey® DRUMMONDVILLE—Ron Ward never had much trouble finding the net, whether he was playing hockey or lacrosse. And now that link has evolved into a Quebec Major Junior Hockey League coaching position with the Drummondville Voltigeurs for the Cornwall native. It’s a homecoming of sorts since he played senior lacrosse for seven years with the Drummondville Athletics and helped win championships in six of them. “I guess these people don’t forget,” said the former New York Raider center who missed the World Hockey Association’s first scoring title by a couple of points when Andre Lacroix had a six-point game for the Philadelphia Blazers on the last night of the schedule. “But they remember me more from lacrosse.” The Voltigeurs won just 11 games, tied two and lost 57 to finish last as a…
