Adirondack Red Wings
The news story in November of 1978 sent sportswriters, hockey officials and fans across the continent reaching for their maps. Glens Falls, NY? Where is Glens Falls and how could it possibly be the site of an American Hockey League franchise? The report seemed preposterous, totally unbelievable. Yet, there it was in black type on the front page of the Post-Star, the daily newspaper in Glens Falls, that the Detroit Red Wings were prepared to move their minor-league farm team from Kansas City to the small upstate new York City. Less than 12 hours after Post-Star editors studied journalism textbooks on the proper procedure to copyright a story, the wire services were relaying the news to media in Canada and the U.S. The disbelievers greatly outnumbered those who thought the idea would…

Canucks Trying To Shake ‘One-Llne’ Image
VANCOUVER—The search for a second line to take the heat off the No. 1 trio of Thomas Gradin, Stan Smyl and Darcy Rota has been long and difficult for the Vancouver Canucks. The other one passed, too, but in his view the jury was still out on the results. “It doesn’t bother me at all,” said Rick Middleton, after combining with Barry Pederson for one of his typical bang-bang goals in a 6-1 exhibition victory over the New York Islanders, the first pre-season game at Boston Garden in nearly a decade. Middleton, who is expected to score 40 or 50 goals for the Bruins every year, occasioned some concern when he entered the hospital shortly before the opening of training camp to have some annoying bone chips removed from his right knee. “It really wasn’t a knee injury,” said Middleton. “It was more like having a…
