THE WHA FOUR YEARS LATER
In this decade, a team salvaged from the ashes of the World Hockey Association will win the Stanley Cup. “It’s going to happen,” said Maurice Filion, general manger of the Quebec Nordiques. “We’re drawing closer. Edmonton and Quebec are there right now. And Winnipeg is coming.” Amid the screams of their labor pains, four former WHA teams joined the National Hockey League in 1979. Humbled, they came in shreds, their lineups of seven years’ making plundered, their pockets emptied. Now, on the advent of their fifth anniversary in the NHL, the Hartford Whalers, Edmonton Oilers, Quebec Nordiques and Winnipeg Jets are once more reaching for the top. The National Hockey League’s 1984 entry draft is still about nine months away, but the scouts have already begun their rating and grading of prospective talent. And if you ask them, they’ll tell you that the 1984 crop is the best and deepest to come along in several years. Oh, sure, you hear that story every year. When Brian Bellows, Gord Kluzak and Gary Nylund were rated one-two-three in 1982, didn’t the scouts work themselves into a lather? “That year (1982) was one helluva draft,” says Minnesota North Star general manager Lou Nanne. who picked second overall and snagged Bellows. “In fact, it’s going to be awfully tough to beat that draft.” Indeed, it will. Kluzak, Bellows, Nylund, Ron Sutter, Scott Stevens, Phil Housley, Ken Yaremchuk, Paul Cyr and Dave Andreychuk were just several…
