Gorence Keys Mariners’ Playoff Drive
H&B Louisville Hockey H&B Louisville Hockey PORTLAND—Five years ago, as a rookie in professional hockey, he was one of the chief contributors in the Maine Mariners’ first Calder Cup championship. He wasn’t around for the Mariners’ second championship a year later, but Tom Gorence is back this season and making big contributions in the Mariners’ run for a third title. With Gorence leading the way on a checking line that is doing much of the team’s scoring, the Mariners opened up a 3-2 lead in their best-of-seven quarterfinal series against the Fredericton Express. Just as this issue was going to press, the teams were skating onto the ice at Fredericton’s Aitken Centre for Game Six. After splitting the first two games at Fredericton, the Mariners returned home to the Cumberland County Civic Center to…
Milford Avoids Heart Surgery
VANCOUVER—Mention Europe to the Vancouver Canucks and the first name that comes to everyone’s lips is not Thomas Gradin or Lars Lindgren, but Jake Milford. Now the senior vice-president of the team and former general manager, Milford was responsible for bringing in the European players that the Canucks currently have on their roster, including Patrik Sundstrom, who many believe will have outstanding NHL seasons as his career progresses. Milford just recently returned from the World Championships in West Germany, where the Canucks had stationed him. They knew he has a long string of contacts in Sweden, Finland and West Germany and it would be in everybody’s best interests to keep them intact. But there was some doubt whether Milford was going to make the trip. Recently, he was having some chest pains and…
Savard’s Effort In Playoffs Will Benefit Next Season
BUFFALO—During one of his “down” periods this season, Andre Savard said, “Every year I have to win a place on the team. Every training camp I have to fight for a job. Next year it will be the same.” Well, maybe it won’t be the same for Andre next September. Before the Stanley Cup playoffs, coach Scotty Bowman said, “When it gets down to the big games, you win or lose with your best men.” When it came to the big games of the Adams Division final against Boston, Bowman cut down to three lines and four defensemen. One of the forwards who was playing regularly and killing penalties was Andre Savard. The 30-year-old all-purpose forward got in about as much ice time as any Sabre during the seven-game series against the Bruins. He…
They’ve Caught The Spirit In Saskatchewan
SASKATOON—Saskatchewan Spirit. That has been one of the names suggested for a proposed National Hockey League team based in Saskatoon, a name which symbolizes the mood and enthusiasm of the province since Dec. 3, when Bill Hunter trumpeted into Saskatoon, heralding an 18,000-seat stadium and an NHL franchise for this province. To many, it was laughable back in those winter days. It was laughable, it seemed, everywhere but in Saskatchewan. There were the jokes about Saskatoon, jokes which persisted in January even after Ralston Purina suggested the St. Louis Blues were in the market and that the pet-food company had indeed entertained an offer from a group in Saskatchewan. By early February, some of the laughter turned to fear around North America because Hunter was within a whisker of buying the Blues and within…
