Hounds Merit ‘Lunchpail Brigade’ Label

H&B Louisville Hockey H&B Louisville Hockey SAULT STE. MARIE—Describing a team as ‘The Lunchpail Brigade’ is almost becoming a cliche these days, but when you look at the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and what they have accomplished this season, the cliche is worth using just one more time. Marie is a hard hat town and their Major A team could play for Don Cherry any day. That’s not to say they need Cherry; they have their own super coach in Terry Crisp. He was recently selected all-star coach for 1982-83. And, in Sam McMaster, they have an excellent general manager, too. Not to mention enterprising. When this…

Caps Exit Playoffs With Heads Held High

LANDOVER—When the Washington Capitals were forced to schedule the third game of their Stanley Cup series against the New York Islanders at 1 p.m. or Saturday, cynics trumpeted the Capitals were sure to be the first team eliminated from the playoffs. The Capitals were beaten, but they lasted as long as anyone else and were around a day longer than Patrick Divisior champion Philadelphia and Montreal, from which so many Capitals came. When the end finally arrived, with a 6-3 defeat in the fourth game, the Capitals went, out with heads high, slicing a 4-1 deficit to 4-3 before Mike Bossy’s third goal of the game sent the Islanders into the next round. There was ample opportunity for Washington’s young team to quit earlier. First, the Islanders scored three times in less than…

Player Of The Week

Minnesota North Star center Bobby Smith takes a great deal of a criticism over the course of a National Hockey League regular season. His critics say he rarely plays up to his vast potential, but the exactness of those claims are a moot point now. The fact is that Smith was the North Stars’ key man in the preliminary playoff series win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. In four games, three of which the Stars won. Smith collected four goals and two assists. Two of the four goals were gamewinners, including an overtime marker. The six-point effort, as well as his inspired play against the Leafs, earned Smith the nod as THE HOCKEY NEWS’ NHL Player of the Week.…
