Gears’ Coach Ends Retirement As Player
SAGINAW—Saginaw GM-coach Marcel Comeau has acquired some help from player Marcel Comeau. “I think I can contribute more as a player than just as a coach. Anyway, things can’t be much worse,” Comeau said after ending his retirement as a player in hopes of pumping enough life into the floundering Gears to qualify them for a playoff berth. Comeau suited up for the first time in a road game at Milwaukee and contributed a pair of assists as the Gears came close but still lost, 5-4. The Gears have won just twice in the last 17 games and have dropped seven of their last eight at home. Comeau’s decision to join the playing ranks again came after Saginaw was humiliated, 9-5, at home by the Flint Generals. Comeau fined each of the players…
Limping Lysiak Bad News For The Hawks
CHICAGO—Center Tom Lysiak, whom Black Hawk coach Orval Tessier regards as one of the team’s best players, has a cracked bone in his right instep and will be sidelined until early in March. The injury happened when Lysiak blocked a power-play blast by Dave Maloney in the first period of a Jan. 23 game against the Rangers in New York. X-rays taken at New York’s Lennox Hill hospital were negative and the injury was originally diagonosed as a bad bruise. But when Lysiak resumed practising 10 days later, it was obvious that he still was severely hampered by the injury. Hawk trainer Skip Thayer suggested more X-rays and this time the crack was discovered. Though Lysiak, who will turn 30 in April, has missed 16 games because of this injury and a previous ankle injury,…
ON THE CONTRARY
A Dear Mike Letter OPEN LETTER TO MIKE MILBURY, BOSTON BRUINS. DEAR MIKE: A mutual friend tells me you were disappointed at not being chosen to the NHL All-Star team. I know that several well-meaning poeple have led you to believe that you are one of the best defensemen in the NHL. They are right, and they are smart. The problem is that they can’t vote for the All-Stars. The people who do vote are sportswriters. Many of them are dumb, very dumb, and that is giving them the better of it. When all is said and done. Mike, the chronic characteristic of some of the people who vote for All-Stars is their consummate lack of hockey knowledge. Actually, you should be flattered that they ignored you. Let me explain: These hockey writers belong to a…
HOCKEY VIEWPOINT
The Doctor Is In “AH, DOCTOR ORR, learned sage of the puck, what an unexpected treat to find you in your hockey cure-all office!” “Well, I don’t usually see patients without an appointment but since you’re here, sit down and tell me what’s troubling you.” “Oh, many things about the great game of hockey are bothering me and I’m hoping that you, in your infinite wisdom, could clear them up for me.” “As always, I’ll do my best. Now, what’s the problem?” “I worry about all the money NHL teams are losing. What will it be this season? Fifteen million dollars? I’m afraid teams will fold up and I won’t get to see all those pretty sweaters.” “That is a concern, isn’t it? The NHL sees that as an improvement, though. Last season, the teams lost…
