Bourque Aiming For Shot At Norris Trophy
BOSTON—“Ray Bourque,” his good friend Steve Kasper once said, “is the kind of a guy who can make 18 other guys believe that things are bound to get better just by watching him put on his sweater before a game.” This year, it’s hard to see how things could get much better for the National Hockey League-leading Boston Bruins now that Bourque, their 22-year-old field general on the ice, is putting on his sweater regularly, night after night. Bourque missed the first 13 games of the season with a broken sinus bone and. allowing him four more games to get back in full stride, the Bruins went 8-6-3 over that stretch. 19 points out of a possible 34. Over the next 30 games, with Bourque taking a regular shift, killing penalties and playing…
HOCKEY PEOPLE
The People’s Choice Nick Fotiu, the most popular of the New York Rangers’ players, shows off his hard hat presented to him before a recent game. It was in honor of his fund-raising efforts to construct an ice rink on his native Staten Island. With the ground just having been broken on the project, Michael Barone, center, and Michael Manna, right, both executives of the of the Staten Island Athletic Alliance and Ice Hockey Association, made the presentation to Fotiu. Still A Winner Former hockey great Gordie Howe landed in the winner’s circle at the Bridgeport, CT Jai Alai competition during a recent visit, which was part of the Hartford Whalers’ promotion night. Howe, who, among other things, is the Whalers’ goodwill ambassador, is shown here with top Jai Alai player Bolivar. The…
Remparts Aren’t Going To Fold: Courteau
QUEBEC—Reports of the Quebec Remparts’ death are greatly exaggerated. While the Remparts are hardly on soild ground—with an average attendance of 1,500, they stand to lose about $100,000 unless they make the playoffs—they haven’t exactly started the S.O.S. signals, either. In the Jan. 13 edition of Le Journal de Montreal, sports writer Marc Lachapelle—whose coverage of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League is unqualified—wrote that the survival of the Remparts was again being questioned. It is essential that the Remparts make the playoffs this season. “No, it’s not in question,” qualified Remparts’ administrative director Gilles Courteau. “Sure, we would like better crowds, but this team will survive.” While the Remparts’ cumulative attendance increased by about 8,000 after 23 home games, the per-game increase is only 346. Last season, the Remparts won only 11 games, missed…
Player Of The Week
For the critics who said Wayne Gretzky couldn’t possibly duplicate his record scoring feats of 1981-82, the Edmonton Oiler whiz kid is just nine points off the pace. Gretzky turned in another productive week as he collected nine points in four games to raise his season’s totals to 42 goals, 85 assists and 127 points in 51 games. How does this compare with last year? He had 61 goals, 75 assists and 136 points at this time last year. Gretzky won the nod as THE HOCKEY NEWS’ NHL Player of the Week after getting his 39th. 40th, 41 st and 42 goals of the season His 40th came on a penalty shot. Gretzky’s first successful one in four attempts.…
