Tulsa Fails To Escape Basement; Checkers Continue To Stumble

TULSA—The up-and-down Oilers broke even in two-game invasions of Birmingham and Wichita, remaining in the Central Hockey League basement as the season moved into its second half. Two goals in the closing minutes rallied Tom Webster’s crew to a 4-3 victory in Wichita, but the next night the Oilers blew a two-goal advantage there and lost in overtime, 5-4. In Birmingham, they dropped a 5-2 decision but rebounded two nights later with a 4-2 win. The week-ending loss broke a fifthplace tie in Wichita’s favor and the Oilers were 21 points behind faltering first-place Indianapolis. Colorado has moved to within three points of the leaders, Birmingham trailed by nine. Salt Lake by 12 and Wichita by 19. Pat Conacher, with two goals including the tying marker, Ken Kuzyk and Peter Wallin, with the…

Based On Impressive Statistics, Glowa Thinks He Merits NHL Shot

BRANDON—All Kelly Glowa wants is a chance—a chance to stmt his stuff in training camp with a National Hockey League team. And he feels he’s earned it. Glowa, a 19-year-old center with the Brandon Wheat Kings of the Western Hockey League, has done everything this season but pull rabbits out of his helmet. After 45 games, he was leading the WHL in all three major offensive categories, with 53 goals, 61 assists and 113 points. And he got some national exposure when the Canadian Press carried a story on him after he picked up a WHL record-tying 10 points—five goals and five assists—in a 12-6 victory over the visiting Prince Albert Raiders. Glowa has been performing these miracles for a struggling team, too. With that win over the Raiders, the Wheat Kings ended…

Henning Enjoys His Time At Track

LONG ISLAND—Lome Henning owns two stop watches. He uses one in his chief occupation as the Islanders’ assistant coach—to time the length of scrimmages, skating drills, etc. He uses the second in his avocation—to clock harness horses in workouts. Henning is part owner of a seven-year-old pacer named Evening’s Choice. The former Islander center and penalty killer has also gained experience as a trainer and driver of standardbreds. Evening’s Choice is what racegoers would term an “honest” horse. The bay gelding earned slightly more than $25,000 last year. He won once and finished second three times. Henning will always remember the horse’s lone victory last year. “He paid $40 (to win) and I wasn’t even there,” Henning said. “We (the Islanders) were in Vancouver for our season opener.” Evening’s Choice suffered a damaged hoof…

Colorado College Plays Key Role With Surprise Win Over Wisconsin

COLORADO SPRINGS—Colorado College hasn’t won often in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association—twice to be exact—but the Isles are playing a key role in the league race. Colorado College, 2-16 in league play, prevented Wisconsin from taking over the league lead by shocking the Badgers. 3-1. to salvage one victory out of a three-game set with Wisconsin. It was a sweet victory for Colorado College, since it came against its former head coach. Jeff Sauer, who left Colorado College to become head coach at Wisconsin this season. And Sauer says it was his own foul-up, as much as the play of Colorado College, that helped his old school beat his new one. Wisconsin was without two players who were forced to return home for scholastic appeals. “We had been on the road for 11 days and…
