BLUELINES

Site of the 1984 All-Star Game will be a nagging question for NHL governors when they convene at Uniondale. League had hoped to have it at Quebec City but Nordiques asked for a delay. The Whalers were the next club asked and declined, clearly displeased with Quebec’s rejection. “Why should we pull Quebec’s chestnuts out of the fire?” beefs a Whalers’ official…A story going the rounds has it that Pat Price was bilked of $500,000 by a British Columbia sports agent who also ripped off a few other NHLers. According to insiders, Price was the one who introduced the players to the so-called agent and, at the time, some were leery of him…Saskatoon’s bid for an NHL team also will be on the all-star discussion table with the anti-Saskatchewan bloc…

They said he capitalized too many times on the power play and teams would eventually find a way to defense him. They said he was lucky and that his luck would run out. The implication was clear—Lysiak was not inviting the Flyers’ “Big Bird” to join him at a nearby refreshment stand where, incidentally, Lysiak was as popular as he was at the Omni. When Bobby Clarke told me he would like to play on the same team as Lysiak. I knew the young Atlanta center was special because Clarke reserves such compliments only for poeple he respects. Another thing I liked about Lysiak was his candor. For example, asked what lessons he had learned in his rookie NHL season, this pride of Medicine Hat replied. “You have to learn…

Coming Next Issue

In our next issue, we’ll profile three interesting items—the annual NHL All-Star game, scheduled for Feb. 8 on Long Island; a sneak preview of the latest in hockey equipment and last, but by no means least, a look at what it means to be an NHL licensee. With sporting good trade shows scheduled for Montreal, Chicago and West Germany, THE HOCKEY NEWS will explore what is happening with the manufacturers and what it will mean to the new fall lines that will be available to the consumer. As well, we’ll look into the licensing of NHL products and the illegal piracy that goes on in that field. And Stan Fischler lets the referees snap back at their critics while Steve Simmons tells you why Saskatoon doesn’t belong in the NHL. All that…
