BEDCLOTHES

A Departure From Follies THIS IS the traditional Christmas column, a departure from the futile follies and backbiting politics of hockey. With your permission, then… A gust of kids blew into the driveway, fancy with new Christmas gloves and helmets and sticks and an old tennis ball for a puck. Van, 13, sped after the bouncing ball and, laughing, knocked her brother Paul, 10, into a snowbank. She faked around her sister Tracy, 8, then drove the ball past Kim, 12. “Goal!” Paul got up, brushing the snow off his parka. “Aw, who d’you think you are?” he yelled at Van. “Wayne Gretzky?” “Yes,” she cried. “Oh, yes!” They lined up again and the yard was alive with sturdy young bodies and gleeful shouting. Family road hockey swirled around little Herbie, who is 5. He is not in the…

BILL FLEISCHMAN’S HOCKEY WORLD

Pieces Of The Puzzle IF THERE IS a more interesting place to work these days than the Boston Bruins’ defense, I haven’t found it. At 34, Brad Park is no longer an all-star, but he is experienced and instinctive and classy, and he can play on my team anytime. If Ray Bourque avoids walking under ladders and slipping on ice-covered sidewalks, he can be an all-star again at the tender age of 22. Gretzky Edged Again As Peeters Wins NHL’s Player Of Month Award

NEW YORK—Wayne Gretzky of the Edmonton Oilers is probably wondering what a guy has to do to win the NHL’s Player of the Month award. Gretzky was edged out for the second straight month as Boston Bruins’ goaltender Pete Peeters got the nod for the November segment. Last month, Mike Bossy of the Islanders beat out Gretzky for the October monthly award. Peeters, who has been outstanding since his off-season trade from Philadelphia, notched seven wins, one loss and two ties in 10 games.…
