Vets’ Character Puts Express On Right Track

H&B LOUISVILLE HOCKEY FREDERICTON—To most people, the announcement last spring that the Vancouver Canucks would send their minor league players to the Quebec Nordiques’ affiliate here had very little significance. Jacques Demers, coach and general manager of the Fredericton Express, realized its importance and welcomed the alliance. “As soon as they announced the Vancouver agreement, I knew we wouldn’t have to live the nightmare we lived last year, that it was something of the past,” Demers said. After a season without an AHL working agreement, Quebec bought a franchise last year and attempted to completely stock it, but found that it just did not have enough capable minor leaguers under contract. Vancouver was having the same problem trying to man its Central League affiliate at Dallas. The union seems to be the answer…

Devils End Foster Episode Sending Winger To Detroit

EAST RUTHERFORD-The Devils completed the disappointing, frustrating “Dwight Foster Episode” but were still having trouble finding a way to conclude a disappointing, frustrating losing streak as they completed the first month of their initial season in New Jersey. Foster, a 25-year-old right winger, was sold to Detroit on Oct. 29, three days after being demoted to Wichita (CHL) and two days after declaring that he no longer wanted to be part of the Devils’ organization. “I asked them, ‘What do you think you’re going to get for me if you send me down?’” Foster revealed in an interview with Mark Everson of The New York Post. “I asked them, ‘Why don’t you buy me out?’ and they said. ‘We can’t do that, it would make us look bad.’” Foster described the Devils’ dealings…

Roberts’ Tamed-Down Play Suits Stars Superbly

BLOOMINGTON—The praise for the Minnesota North Stars’ defense has been considerable, and predictable. There’s Craig Hartsburg, lauded as an all-star, the new team captain; there’s Curt Giles, whose consistently outstanding play has forced him.to emerge from the background; there’s Brad Maxwell, tough and possessing that big point shot; there’s Gary Sargent, greatly skilled but fighting physical problems; there’s newcomer Dan Mandich, and solid veteran Fred Barrett. And there’s Gordie Roberts. In his career, which began as a youthful prodigy in Hartford, Roberts has always been in the spotlight, sometimes an unwilling center of attention. At Minnesota, however, he’s almost become an unsung hero. Not forgotten, actually, just overshadowed by the stories of the rest of the defensive crew. And yet, ironically, Gordie Roberts is playing the best hockey of his career to start…
