The Hockey News
The International Hockey Weekly Founded in 1947 Published by W.C.C. Publishing Ltd. 214 King St. West, Suite 314, Toronto, Ont. M5H 1K4 Rank Amateurs IN THE NOVEMBER issue of Playboy magazine, there is a story entitled, Circle of Deceit: The Hypocrisy of College Athletics. The article chronicles the plethora of dirty dealings in U.S. college athletics, specifically football and basketball. Athletically gifted teenagers are, according to the story, receiving everything from cashmere sweaters and free abortions for their girlfriends to $25,000 a year for themselves. The story does not say that college athletics stink. In return, the Hawks received “future considerations”—which undoubtedly means a draft choice—and Larry Goodenough, a defenseman for their American League farm club in Springfield, Mass. “What made it so difficult is because I like Ruskowski so much,” said Pulford. “He’s a great competitor. He comes to play and he’s a class person. “In the long run, though, it’s the best thing for him. I told him he’s too fine a person to stay here and not play because that would be too tough on him.” Ruskowski was informed of the trade after…
