It was something like Pravda putting the knock on Leonid Brezhnev. “Sure,” I said, “I’ll do it,”—and I did. Just as Horton had requested, he received an article that was tough and critical. Fair? I’m not so sure. The headline—which I didn’t write, it was done by the Copy desk—went a bit overboard. “99—THE GREAT…

Winner Gagnon Handles Laval Reins

LAVAL—Your basic knight in shining armor—at least according to president Claude Foumel—has become the fourth coach of the Laval Voisins in three years. Gerard Gagnon, 33, has signed a one-year contract to coach the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League team. And Fournel is convinced his new protege will accomplish what Roger Picard, Fournel himself, Jacques St. Jean and Richard Jamieson could not—turn the Voisins into winners. “The acquisition of Gagnon by our organization is the beginning of championship teams,” Fournel said. “He’s been a winner 10 of the 12 years he’s coached; he always finds a way to win. “When he played for me, he was my captain and was the best leader I’ve had on any team.” Fournel and Gagnon first met 13 years ago as coach and player for Montreal North of the…
