Melnyk Replaces McCammon At Mariners’ Helm

H&B Louisville Hockey H&B Louisville Hockey PORTLAND—And the new coach of the Mariners is…Jerry Melnyk. The parent Philadelphia Flyers stunned more than a few people when they called upon Maine coach Bob McCammon to replace Pat Quinn with the big club, but they also left the Mariners without a coach for awhile. After some deliberation, and a powwow between chairman Ed Snider, president Ed Anderson, general manager Keith Allen and McCammon, Melnyk, a member of the Flyers’ organization for the past 14 years, mostly as a scout, was handed the job. A player for 14 years, four of them in the NHL, Melnyk was installed because of his familiarity with the Mariners’ personnel and the Flyers’ system. The Mariners brass had appointed John Paddock as interim coach while the veteran was recuperating from a broken arm…

Goring Got Going When Playoff Time Approached Again

UNIONDALE – It’s spring again and the Stanley Cup playoffs are upon us and Butch Goring wants to redeem himself. It was just under a year ago that MacMillan was officially named general manager of the Rockies after serving one year as head coach. His first year as GM has not been as fruitful as he had hoped, but if anything, MacMillan’s traumatic season has proven valuable in terms of experience. The Rockies’ 1981-82 NHL season was supposed to be one of promise—with an almost complete overhaul of talent and optimism galore. Such has not been the case. “No, I think last summer we had great hopes for the hockey club,” MacMillan said as the Rockies’ sixth—and possibly last—NHL season neared conclusion. “Our expectations were much higher than…
