Northeastern, UNH Show Well Despite Defeats
PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The East bowed out once again in the NCAA Tournament, leaving the final game to representatives from the West for the fourth straight year. Yet there’s no shame left by the many devotees of ECAC Division One, and least of all by defeated semifinalists Northeastern and New Hampshire. Each team gave a good accounting of itself. Northeastern was clearly overmatched in individual talent but true to its gritty winning attitude of 1981-82, the team never gave in. The 6-2 defeat by North Dakota was decisive but cheering nonetheless for the long time doormats turned ECAC playoff champs. New Hampshire handled Wisconsin a little better than Northeastern digested North Dakota. UNH had many good chances on Terry Kleisinger, who finished up with 29 saves as did Wildcat goalie Todd Pearson. When the teams…

Whalers’ Pleau Learning Value Of Discipline
HARTFORD—Larry Pleau can laugh at himself, that is one of his gifts. “How come, when there’s only one empty seat on a plane, it’s always next” to me?” asked Pleau, who is completing his first full year as general manager and coach of the Hartford Whalers. “It never used to be that way.” Pleau has been with the Whalers for 10 years, first as a player, then as an assistant coach and now as the head honcho. He has learned much in his first tour, much about his team, much about the organization, and much about himself. “I came in here talking about professionalism, but believe me, I wasn’t professional enough,” he said. “When I was a player, I had all the answers. Now I’m not sure if 1 have any. I’m learning,…

Little Lukowich A Terror For Rising Winnipeg
WINNIPEG—One day Morris Lukowich was working in the basement of his new home and he decided to change the air filter on his furnace. Less than expert in such procedures, he knelt to see what he was doing. Something fell, dust billowed in the air and his eyes became full of grime and grit. Patches were placed over both eyes. Eventually, one came off and then the other…just in time for the Winnipeg Jets’ first game of the season. Squinting through blood-shot eyes, he informed coach Tom Watt he was ready to play. “I’m not going to dress you,” said the solemn Watt. “You haven’t skated for 10 days.” Lukowich protested. “I’ve gotta dress,” he said, emphatically. “If I don’t dress for this one, I won’t be able to play all 80.” Watt has often thought about the remark. “I…
