HARTFORD—Larry Pleau can laugh at himself, that is one of his gifts. “How come, when there’s only one empty seat on a plane, it’s always next” to me?” asked Pleau, who is completing his first full year as general manager and coach of the Hartford Whalers. “It never used to be that way.” Pleau has been with the Whalers for 10 years, first as a player, then as an assistant coach and now as the head honcho. Flames Fighting: Selves And Others

CALGARY—Of the Flames and their latest recover in the National Hockey League standings: With the season going into its final week, the Flames are trying to put the first 80 games behind them and start afresh in the playoffs. That’s not news really. Every other team in the league that promised big and delivered something less echoes that rhetoric. But for the Flames, it’s not that easy. Just when they thought all their internal problems had been worked out, more problems surfaced. Goaltender Pat Riggin renewed his feud with the team’s coaches, Al MacNeil and Pierre Page, after MacNeil yanked him halfway through a 9-4 loss to Los Angeles.
