Snag May Ensue Over Top Midget; Brantford Early Surprise Of Playoffs
LOUISVILLE HOCKEY STICKS LOUISVILLE HOCKEY STICKS KINGSTON—It’s very likely the top selection in the midget draft this year won’t even be eligible for Rookie of the Year honors next season. Kirk Muller, a brilliant, recently turned 16-year-old center with the Kingston Canadians, has been rated the top available player for the draft and the fact that he will have a season of major A experience under his belt and will still be a midget player is a big bonus. The only snag in his obviously very bright and hopefully uninterupted future might be a possible battle ahead to keep him in his home city of Kingston where this season as an undrafted minor midget he scored 12 goals and 38 assists for 50 points in 56 games. He will play next season as a…
Deadline Day Is Ominous For Oilers’ Old Guard
EDMONTON—The desk clerk at San Diego’s Vacation Village Hotel, obviously deluged with calls for Suite 507, couldn’t resist the temptation… “Is that Glen Sather or Monty Sather?” she chuckled to a reporter who was seeking the room number of the Edmonton Oilers’ manager-coach, who had his National Hockey League outfit hidden under the California sunshine for a three-day, late-season hiatus. One and the same Mr. Sather, darling. Sather, who’s been jokingly referred to by his players as Monty as in Monty Hall of television’s Let’s Make A Deal, was up to trading deadline tricks once again this season when he swung a handful of deals. In a nutshell: • On the day prior to the deadline, Sather acquired 1979 Toronto No. 1 draft pick Laurie Boschman, while sending a pair of fifth-round choices, neither of…
Mohawks Faced With Difficult Road To Playoffs
H&B Louisville Hockey H&B Louisville Hockey MUSKEGON—The International Hockey League season had but three weeks to run and the best race was at the bottom of the ladder. Four teams—Saginaw, Fort Wayne, Flint and Muskegon—were only four points apart and one of the four will not get an invitation to the post-season party. Six of the seven teams will compete in the Turner Cup warfare with the first place team, (Toledo has opened a wide margin), taking on the sixthplace club, two (Kalamazoo or Milwaukee) meeting five and three going against four. The teams will each play best of seven game series. The three survivors will then play a four-game round robin, two at home and two away, to determine the finalists. The two teams with the most points will meet in a best…
