Wings Overpaid? DETROIT—It’s no secret around the National Hockey League that the Detroit Red Wings’ inflated payroll is the highest in hockey…but just how high is it? A prospectus—prepared by Thomson McKinnon Securities Inc., a Chicago brokerage firm hired by the Wings, and sent to potential buyers for the team—lists total salaries for active player contracts at the start of the 1981-82 NHL season at $3.88 million. Vaclav Nedomansky, a 37-year-old forward who is currently playing for the Wings’ farm team in Glens Falls, N.Y., is the highest paid player at $288,000. He will earn $285,000 next Reason and $290,000 in 1983-84. Rookie left wing Mark Osborne, a first-year pro who leads the Wings in scoring, was at the bottom of the pay scale, making $60,000 when the season began. That’s on a…

King’s name has also been mentioned as a logical choice for an NHL coaching position, an occupation which ended recently for St. Louis’ Red Berenson, Philadelphia’s Pat Quinn and Wayne Maxner of Detroit. Below, King comments on some of the tactics he would like to see Team Canada employ against the Europeans as well as his plans for the future, career wise. Some of…

Eva Pocklington, a vivacious blonde with eyes that are apt to mesmerize, disturbed her hubby’s merriment when she leaned over and suggested: “Peter, there are times when 1 feel you love that kid more than me.” To which Peter Pocklington replied: “Don’t push it!” A month after Wayne Gretzky had detonated Phil Esposito’s single-season goal-scoring record with his 77th, 78th and 79th goals during the final 6½ minutes of the Edmonton Oilers’ 6-3 victory over the Sabres, Pocklington sat at his oak desk—his emotions considerably composed from that intoxicating occasion in beautiful, downtown Buffalo. “I think maybe you had better temper that a bit,” proposed the Oilers’ owner…
