Indians Will Count On McClanahan To Put Charge In Their Power Play
SPRINGFIELD — Rob McClanahan wasn’t expected to become a savior or anything like that, but coach Tom Webster was counting on the former Olympian giving a boost to an anemic power play attack that has plagued the Indians. McClanahan was reunited with his former. Olympic coaches as Craig Patrick and Herb Brooks of the New York Rangers acquired his services from the Hartford Whalers. It marked the third NHL organization in two years for the 24-year-old winger. After competing in the Olympics, McClanahan played for the Buffalo Sabres organization for two years before being obtained by Hartford prior to this season. In 18 games with Hartford, the 5-10, 180-pounder totaled just three points and he accumulated 11 goals and 18 assists in 27 games while playing for the Binghamton Whalers. Webster was happy to…
First Place Hopes Dashed, Flyers Gear For Playoffs
PHILADELPHIA — A season’s worth of episodes may not be long enough for the Flyers to Tell Their Truth. They’ve stood up and sat down more often than the patients in the diarrhea ward. They ended a nine-game winless stretch (0-5-4) by scoring three goals in the third period for a 5-4 victory over Pittsburgh, then kicked away a 4-1 lead before triumphing over Buffalo 6-4 on Bill Barber’s goal with 35 seconds left. The current state of the opposition (the Penguins and Sabres had combined for only two victories in their last 14 games) had to be considered but it was agreed this certainly beat losing. The Flyers, caught deeper into transition than their architects planned at the beginning of the season, need to use most of their 25 remaining…

The Center On The Bruins’ Great Kraut Line?
Former National Hockey League star Milt Schmidt has a 45 year-old love affair going on with the city of Boston. With the exception of two years in Washington, D.C. and another three and one-half years in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II, Schmidt has been a part of the Beantown hockey scene since 1936 when he first donned the uniform of the Boston Bruins. Since that time he has been a player, coach, assistant general manager, and general manager of the Bruins. Today, the 63 year-old Kitchener, Ont., native is manager of a private club located in the Boston Garden. “I consider Boston my home,” said Schmidt, a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. “I have a lot of fine memories here. “The Bruins are like a family to…
