SLAPSHOTS
Wales Win Again LANDOVER — All Star games tend to be yawners but no one went home from the NHL’s 34th annual classic at Landover, MD., feeling they didn’t get their money’s worth. The Wales Conference defeated the Campbell Conference All Stars 4-2 on a pair of goals by New York Islander sharpshooter Mike Bossy. The feat brought Bossy the award as the game’s most valuable player as well as a $16,000 sports car and a silver tray. It was the sixth win in seven years for the Wales against the Campbells. A sellout crowd of 18,130 was on hand at the Capital Center in Landover to watch the more experienced Wales Conference dominate the younger Campbell Conference selects,’ led by Wayne Gretzky. The Great Gretzky scored one of the two Campbell goals…

Nachbaur Employs Winning Attitude
HARTFORD — The thin line which separates them that do and them that don’t has something to do with attitude. Generations of could-have-beens are scattered across North America, left, in some cases, alone, to ponder the broken dreams of youth and excessive promise. Why is it that some athletes make it, while other, more talented athletes do not? The answer lies above the shoulders and inside the sweater. The answer is attitude. Say hello to Don Nachbaur of the, Hartford Whalers, who, in a very real sense, is experiencing the most difficult season of his young career. “If they paid me to score again, I think they would have gotten rid of me by now,” said Nachbaur, who turned 23 in late January. Nachbaur scored a goal in the Whalers’ opening game. He then went O-for-November, O-for-December…

Badgers In Danger Of Being Caught At Wire
MADISON — The Western Collegiate Hockey Association race may prove to be two weeks too long for the mighty Wisconsin Badgers, the nation’s top-ranked team since the first poll came out last fall. What was once a comfortable 3½ game bulge has dwindled to 1½ in recent weeks and Wisconsin no longer is regarded as superior to everyone in the WCHA. What has turned the WCHA into a two-team race is the emergence of North Dakota as the hottest team in the west. Coach Gino Gasparini’s Sioux have won 10 of their last 12 WCHA games and 16 of 19 overall to turn the heat on the Badgers. And with Wisconsin visiting North Dakota next, a sweep by the Sioux would unseat Wisconsin from the WCHA lead. Wisconsin, which had the 3½-game bulge with…

It’s BU’s Turn As Surprise Beanpot Winner
BOSTON — Ah, Beanpot. You’ve done it again. This time it’s Boston University, but the script is the same as it’s been for the past two years. The magical Boston Garden Tournament celebrated its 30th annual showdown finale on Monday, February 8 before the usual sellout crowd and a national television audience. The Terriers, terrors of Eastern hockey for the decade of the 1970’s but fallen on hard times of late, rose to the occasion with a masterful display of forechecking and goaltending and upset Boston College 5-1. It is the third consecutive time that a Beanpot team with no hope for a post season playoff berth has risen to smite the most consistently good Boston team, Boston College. In 1980, it was Northeastern’s miracle Huskies, and last year it was Harvard’s…
