Flames Count On Nilsson To Ignite Power Play
CALGARY — One player, Rejean Lemelin, returned to form and another, Kent Nilsson, returned to the lineup. That was the good news for the Calgary Flames. The bad news was that the club’s erratic play, the only consistent feature of the current season, continued as the Flames began their third extended road trip with two wins, a tie and a lot of the same questions. Nilsson, after missing 39 games because of shoulder surgery, returned to the lineup in late January against the Hartford Whalers, right on schedule. Considering his 12-week convalesence and his lack of ice time immediately before his return, Nilsson played pretty well. “I’m a little nervous,” said Nilsson, the team’s leading scorer last year.“I don’t want to get hurt again. If I get hurt again, that’s it for this…
Hot And Cold Oilers Closing Gap On Dallas
TULSA — The ice Oilers were either up or down, there seemed to be no middle ground. Their January seven-game winning streak was followed by three straight setbacks on the road. But a return to the Assembly Center seemed to be all the tonic that coach Dave McDowall’s men needed. They trimmed archrival Oklahoma City, 5-1, then held on to beat Wichita, 7-4, after almost blowing a five-goal lead. Kris Manery had his third hat trick of the season against Wichita in the first Sunday afternoon game played in Tulsa in more than 30 years. The 27-year-old right wing from Leamington, Ont. had two in the opening period, and Glenn Hicks’ long slapshot brought a 3-0 margin. Manery clinched the hat trick at 1:49 of the second period, and Ron Wilson made…

IHL ‘Foundation’ Shaken By Financial Worries
FORT WAYNE — The foundation is shaky. The International Hockey League’s “Rock of Gibraltar” has some cracks. Could the oldest minor hockey league be living on borrowed time? That’s a question which was raised at the league’s semi-annual meeting and the financial pulse of the seven franchises — and the league as a whole — was the main topic on the agenda. The precarious position the league finds itself in was magnified when Fort Wayne announced its franchise was in serious trouble and that it may not be able to finish the current season. Fort Wayne in trouble? The league’s oldest franchise, now in its 30th season, has been the rock on which the league has survived perilous times in the past. If Fort Wayne folds, can the league’s demise be far…
