Possibilities Of Development League Worth Exploring
During the recent NHL general manager’s meetings, there was discussion of the idea of a National Development League, for players aged 18 to 22, to operate under the guidance of the NHL. Ed Chynoweth, the chairman of the board of the Canadian Major Junior Hockey League and the president of the Western Hockey, is one who feels that the possibilities of such a league should be examined. Here are his views on the subject. I am being labeled as a booster of the National Development League and I am a booster, a booster of exploring the possibilities. I don’t think you can just sit back; wedon’t do things today in any type of business the same way as we did 10 years ago. Although I believe in the concept of such a…
HOCKEY WORLD
Two Great Leaders DARRYL SITTLER and Bobby Clarke, together, at last. Please don’t bother coach Pat Quinn, GM Keith Allen or the Philadelphia fans for awhile — they still can’t believe Sittler and Clarke are teammates. That two of hockey’s greatest players and most inspirational leaders are actually teammates probably won’t hit everybody in Philadelphia until Clarke returns from a broken foot. Then, when you see them practicing together and playing together, your eyes can really start spinning in amazement and appreciation. The relationship between these two gentlemen began during the chaotic Flyers-Toronto playoff games of the mid-70s. These were the series that included Sittler scoring five goals in one game, Ontario Attorney General Roy McMurtry intervening in the on-ice battles, reporters spending almost as much time in courtrooms as they did at…
Owner Pollin Has Proven He Usually Reaches Goals
In 1972, San Diego was one of several candidates for a National Hockey League expansion franchise to be held two years later. Although Kansas City was conceded one spot because of the involvement of the son of New York Rangers’ president Bill Jennings, the San Diego group felt it had a good chance to corral the other club. Then, as Max McNab recalls, it suddenly blew up. “Less than two weeks before the NHL meeting, Bob Breitbard came in and told me, ‘Our chances are slim and none; I just found out Abe Pollin is after one,’” said McNab, the former general manager of the Washington Capitals. Even on the West Coast a decade ago, Pollin was known as a man who got what he went after. As a boy, he sat in…
Winnipeg Looking Forward To April Hockey
WINNIPEG — Nobody is making plans for April. Not anymore. A year ago at this time, many of the Winnipeg Jets were booking hotel reservations in Hawaii or arranging flights to Miami, the Caribbean or Mexico. Anywhere they could escape people who would constantly remind them of a season wracked by misery. Today, it’s a different story and a man who is playing an instrumental role in the turnabout of the Jets is 36-year-old Serge Savard, a veteran of 15 National Hockey League campaigns. Undoubtedly, he is their leader. Teammates worship him. “Hey, Serge,” says Dale Hawerchuk, 18 years his junior. “How many Stanley Cup rings have you got?” Parking a $5 cigar in his mouth, Savard spreads his hands to indicate 10. “One for every finger,” he says. ‘-’Okay,” responds Hawerchuk, “then how many Memorial Cup…
