Lambert Was Some Buy For Buffalo
BUFFALO — “I never got so much for my money as I did when I got Lambert,” said Scotty Bowman, after his Buffalo Sabres trounced the Toronto Maple Leafs, 8-2. It would be difficult to dispute that statement. Lambert scored three goals — his first National Hockey League hat trick in that game. That increased his goal total for the season to 18. The first goal, first of the game, came on the power play. That gave Yvon a team-leading 12 power play goals. He has four game winners, which ties him for first among the Sabres. Lambert cost the Sabres $2,500 in the NHL waiver draft last October. At the time, Gil Perreault, the Sabres’ top center and leading offensive threat was sidelined by a broken ankle. Andre Savard, another regular center, was…

Mullen’s Long Wait For NHL Job May Be Over
ST. LOUIS — Joey Mullen had to wait a long time for his first National Hockey League goal. But he didn’t have to wait long at all for his second. It took Mullen two and a half years to get his first NHL goal, but then he had to wait only eight seconds for No. 2. Signed as a free agent out of Boston College in 1979, Mullen was an immediate hit in the Central Hockey League, playing for the St. Louis Blues’ Salt Lake City farm team. He was the CHL’s Rookie of the Year after scoring 40 goals and adding 32 assists in 1979-80. He followed that by being named the CHL’s Most Valuable Player after scoring 59 goals and adding 58 assists in 1980-81. But all the time, Mullen kept wondering…

Kings Reunite Under Perry
LOS ANGELES — Horowitz didn’t give his first recital in Carnegie Hall, nor did Michelangelo paint his first ceiling in the Sistine Chapel. So what was Don Perry doing, coaching his first NHL game in the Montreal Forum, most hallowed shrine on ice? “Oh, I didn’t mind that,” he said. “I had to start somewhere.” But that’s hardly the place to guarantee a guy a successful debut, and it wasn’t. The Kings lost, 2-1, and by the end of Perry’s first week as L.A. coach, they still hadn’t won, losing in Calgary and tying Vancouver to close out a 0-5-2 trip. “It’s not going to happen overnight,” Perry said after the Montreal game. “I don’t kid myself about that.” For a while, there was some question whether Perry would start at all. The Kings…
