Gretzky Gets 50 In 39 Games; Zeroes In On Espo’s Record
“There’s nothing left to say about him that already hasn’t been said. And none of that was adequate.” — Bobby Clarke, Dec. 30, 1981 EDMONTON — Perhaps not, but Bobby Clarke may have come the closest himself with one somewhat extraneous adjective. “His scoring statistics are obscene,” said Clarke, the splendid Philadelphia center who over the last 13 years has established himself as hockey’s premier competitor. He wasn’t just whistling through his dentures either. The manner in which Wayne Gretzky indecently exposed the 50 goals in 50 games standard that Rocket Richard (1944-45) and Mike Bossy (1980-81) shared was indeed offensive to modest sensibilities. Some not so modest either. Like Clarke, who was on hand that frigid December night the Edmonton Oilers’ scoring sensation scuttled the Flyers (7-5) with a five-goal performance that produced 50…

QMJHL President Undergoes Stomach Surgery
MONTREAL — Quebec Major Junior Hockey League president Jean Rougeau has had what was termed a “successful” operation to remove a tumor from his stomach which was believed’to be cancerous. Rougeau is 52. The operation lasted four hours and was performed by Dr. Morgan at Montreal’s St-Luc Hospital. Rougeau remained in Montreal following the surgery, staying with his parents, before heading to Florida to convalesce until Jan. 9 after which he’ll return to Montreal for treatment. “I am aware of my state of health because I told the doctors as soon as I came into the hospital that I didn’t want to play hide and seek,” Rougeau told the Journal de Montreal’s Marc Lachapelle. “My situation is serious — I have a 50 percent chance — but I have a good outlook and…

Funky Flockhart Fast Becoming Dynamic Flyer
PHILADELPHIA — If Ron Flockhart played basketball, his nickname would be World. Or Fly or Sly, eh? This master of many moves and native son of Smithers, B.C., is the Prince of Mid Ice. Clearly the Flyers’ Amazing Doctor F. A hockey writer begs for some license here. Can Ron Flockhart have funk? Leaving Flockhart with a nickname like Flocky is like wrapping jewels in plain brown paper. It just isn’t good enough. “How about ‘jerk’?” smiled Bobby Clarke. “That’s what some guys around here have called him.” Bobby meant that in jest, but wait a minute. Here’s Ron Flockhart, coming through center and his shoulders are going up and down like a marionette. Left, right, left again, and sooner than Joe or Jimmy Watson can say “yup, yup, yup”, the puck is…
