Mel, Lanny Fueling Flames’ Resurgence

CALGARY — Forget Batman and Robin. Don’t bother with The Lone Ranger and Tonto. The Calgary Flames have just had their NHL season rescued by another dynamic duo — Mel Bridgman and Lanny McDonald. At the midway point of the National Hockey League season, the Flames have committed an abrupt about-face, one with pleasing consequences to their tempermental supporters. From struggling with the Colorado Rockies for last place in the Smythe division, the Flames were in a battle with the Vancouver Canucks for second place, behind the out-of-sight but not out-of-mind Edmonton Oilers. Minor Hockey Week EACH YEAR THE Canadian Amateur Hockey Association takes pride in setting aside a special week to join with all Canadians in a tip of the hat to thousands of youngsters and volunteer workers who are the lifeblood of our national game. With a timely reminder that “Minor Hockey is For the Player”, Minor Hockey Week will be observed January 16 to 23 with a gala kickoff in Winnipeg. The cameras of Hockey Night in Canada will help showcase the opening ceremonies at the Winnipeg Arena, with a number of NHL stars, CAHA officials and provincial and civic dignitaries. The Winnipeg opening is but one of several highlights of Minor Hockey Week, which this year applauds Governor-General Edward Schreyer as its honorary chairman. The fallout from the Washington Caps’ purge of Max McNab and Gary Green continues into the new year. One Capital Centre survivor is bitter about McNab’s firing but couldn’t suppress his glee over Green’s departure. He wouldn’t elaborate. One theory is that McNab still would be GM if he had forcefully dumped Green earlier… New York newsmen figure Ranger Mark Pavelich for a near-mute. Actually, he’s a good interview. A close friend from the Midwest tips off that Mark “has been burned” a few times by reporters. He fears the Manhattan media… Gilles Gilbert confides that he has a “must-hit” name on his black list.
