When Plattsburgh State University’s new assistant hockey coach, Jacques Lemaire, traveled to the United States College Coaches Convention in Florida last spring his plans were to land a job as an assistant coach with a major U.S. university. Then he met Herb Hammond. Hammond, head hockey coach at Plattsburgh State in Plattsburgh, N.Y., recalled meeting Lemaire for the first time. “He was looking for a job with a big name college and had two jobs apparently lined up,” said Hammond. “During our conversation I mentioned that if things didn’t work out to give me a call. I didn’t think I’d see him again.” But two weeks after the meetings Lemaire, a former star with the Montreal Canadiens, took Hammond up on his offer. “We didn’t really have any money for an assistant when Jacques…

U Of T Blues Tops Even Under Reconstruction

TORONTO — Who would have ever predicted back in October, that the Toronto Blues would remain the only undefeated team in regular season action by Christmas break? Habs’ Laughlin Takes Wickenheiser’s Spot

MONTREAL — Craig Laughlin was not expected to make the Canadiens this fall. Despite having a better-than-average training camp, Laughlin, as expected, was returned to the Nova Scotia Voyageurs for what he thought would be his second full season in the American Hockey League. But as injuries continued to hit the Canadiens in early December, it was decided that Laughlin should be the man noved up a notch. In his official NHL debut in Detroit, he had a tough night, was on for three goals against and none for as the Canadiens lost 4-3. Still, he can be excused a little, he had been travelling all day and getting to Detroit from Halifax is not that easy. Since then, there has been no stopping the graduate of Clarkson College. He was among the top…
