Playing On Gretzky Line Lumley’s’ Fantasy Island’

EDMONTON — To the ever-expanding list of wingers who understand and appreciate the magic of performing alongside Wayne Gretzky, add one more. “Gretz, he’s something else,” grinned Dave Lumley, the born-again Edmonton Oilers’ right winger. “You just go to the open space and he’ll get the puck to you.” Such is also why Nov. 15, 1981 is permanently etched upon Lumley’s calendar as a red-letter day. For this was the night when he deleted the goose-eggs and minuses from his personal statistics in his first full-time employment on The Boy Wonder’s right flank. First off, a briefing perhaps is in order … Over the past 15 months Lumley has logged a lot of time in and out of manager-coach Glen Sather’s doghouse. Indians Gain Ground In Division

SPRINGFIELD — The Indians concluded their final visit to the Canadian Maritimes on a high note and then carried that over to post a three-game winning streak while challenging New Brunswick and Nova Scotia for second place in the North. Coach Tom Webster’s charges claimed a 4-2 triumph over Fredericton with Ron Plumb earning a goal and two assists and then proceeded to nail down a 6-1 home victory over Erie and a 6-4 road win against Adirondack. Claude Larose and Gary Burns each had two goals to help beat Erie while Brian Ziegler scored his first professional lamplighter. Lance Nethery and Cam Connor earned a pair in the win in Glens Falls. The New York Rangers recalled veteran Steve Vickers. FREDERICTON — The ailing Express saw their losing streak extended to four games…

To Our Subscribers

In the past few weeks we have received letters from many of you who are concerned about the information that appears on your mailing labels each week. The 4-digit number that you now see (ie. 8205, 8236, 8315, etc.) breaks down as follows: The first two digits in that number represent our publishing year, which runs from October to September. Therefore, 82 would mean that your subscription runs from October, 1981 to September, 1982. The last two digits represent the issue number at which your subscription expires (1 through 37). So if, for instance, the number on your label says 8215, it simply means that your subscription will expire with the 15th issue of the publishing year which runs from Oct., 1981, to Sept., 1982. The issue number can be found each week…

Forum Game Brings Out The Tiger In Williams

VANCOUVER — There had been reports that Dave Williams was not really the Tiger anymore. He had gone seven games without a minor penalty, something not even the most passive Swede can always manage. But in a recent Saturday night game in Los Angeles he regained his form — if those terms may be applied — as he fought with Steve Jensen in an unbelievable donnybrook, then battled Dave Taylor, before venturing into the stands after an unruly fan. Williams in fact had five players for company in chasing the LA fans about 10 or 15 feet into the stands: Stan Smyl, Curt Fraser, Glen Hanlon, Ron Delorme and Richard Brodeur also joined the fray. The odd part about the incident, which happened with less than a minute left in a 3-2 Vancouver…
