Garvin Changing Flint’s Game Plan

FLINT — Ted Garvin has changed. At least it would appear so. The change is reflected in the Flint Generals, who were surprisingly hot in the International Hockey League. Garvin’s Generals were riding a four-game winning streak. Four-game sweeps are what Garvin normally saves for the playoffs. His philosophy long has been to save the best for last. First place over the regular season is the consolation prize. What people remember is who wins the playoffs — or in the IHL, the Turner Cup. Slow starts, fast finishes. Habs’ Nilan Draws Second NHL Suspension

MONTREAL — For the second time in as many seasons, Chris Nilan has been given an unscheduled holiday by the National Hockey League. LOS ANGELES — Evidence of a team in decline: — three straight losses by six goals or more, and six games out of 23 in which it had lost by five goals or more; — a closed-door, players-only meeting following one of those losses, an 11-4 laughter in Edmonton in which a 10-year-old club record was tied for most goals allowed; — a player suspended indefinitely for conduct detrimental to the club; — players summoned from the minors and talk that trades were in the offing. It was that kind of week for the Kings, who are making a mockery of predictions that they would win the Smythe Division. By the end of November, only Colorado stood between the Kings and last place in the division. And after a 7-1 loss in Calgary, the second…

BLUELINES

The Canadiens would like the Rangers left wing Don Maloney … An NHL p.r.person Warns that the league must put the clamp on players who tell media that the playoffs, not the regular season, is all that matters. Too many fans are getting that message … Some rumors emanating from Denver, re the Rockies’ future, are scary. A friend moans that Bert Marshall has aged terribly since becoming Colorado coach. Players appear to be moving with no purpose…. Caps’ coach Bryan Murray and Whalers’ assistant coach Rick Ley have a hate going … Ley is miffed over the way Murray jawed with Chris Kotsopoulos … “Don’t talk to my players,” warns Ley, “talk to me!” … Pierre Mondou is one Canadien who insists that, no matter what changes are made…
