Bruins’ Overly Cautious Style Miffs Cheevers
BOSTON — Former coach Don Cherry used to say that when his Boston Bruins played the Philadelphia Flyers the referee would let everything go in hopes that the two toughest teams in hockey would croak each other. The result was some of the most crowd-pleasing hockey of the 1970s, even though the new breed of skate-shoot-score! hockey people shuddered at the very thought of it. It’s not that way anymore. The new breed appears to have won. The Flyers recently came limping into Boston Garden for their only visit of the season, leading the NHL in penalty minutes (722), of course, and trying to break a string of six straight losses on the road. Dinosaurs Proving Far From Extinct
CALGARY — All the, pre-season predictions concerning the Dinosaurs can now be thrown out the window. With only six veterans returning it appeared the 81-82 campaign would be written off as one of those so called rebuilding years. However, no one ever sold short the coaching expertise of George Kingston and he is living up to his reputation. “We have a very young and inexperienced team but they are overcoming these shortcomings with hard work and lots of desire,” Kingston stated. Calgary ran their season record to four wins and one loss with a decisive 7-2 shellacking over their arch rival Alberta Golden Bears.
